The Armed Forces Community Outreach Service provides a single point of contact for those due to be discharged, veterans, serving reservists and all family members. Based within a housing setting, the service provides housing advice and support but support and advice can also be provided on a range of issues including benefits, debt, pensions, substance mis-use, accessing employment, education, accessing community groups and any aspects of the general transition into civilian life. Advice and support can be provided directly or through partnership work and signposting to more specialist agencies. All of our existing staff have previously served in the forces and understand the barriers that the transition into civilian life can bring. The service operates across the area of Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham and Northumberland.

Give Us Time is a small, niche service charity that focuses exclusively on the military family. As a charity we provide free holiday accommodation to veterans and serving personnel and their families, as well as the families of those who have lost their lives due to military service. The holidays we provide – from a night in London, a weekend break in the country, or a week’s holiday in the sun – facilitate reconnection and readjustment to family life following long periods of separation due to operational deployment. As well as individual family holidays, we also run group holidays for those families who live, work and serve together. Give Us Time relies on donations of time from the owners of holiday groups, hotels, holiday homes and timeshares and puts them to good use. We believe that to have happy service personnel you need happy service families.

The Charity’s objects are: to support armed forces personnel, their families and veterans through such charitable means as the trustees think fit and in particular: (a) to support the morale of armed forces personnel by giving support to their family units; (b) to assist service families, especially, but not exclusively those who have suffered loss or injury; (c) to help both armed forces personnel and their families make the transition from military to civilian life; and to relieve serving and former members of the armed forces and their dependants who are in need by virtue of their physical or mental health or their economic circumstances.

Give Us Time aims to provide holidays for both serving and veteran military personnel and their families from across the British Armed Forces. As a charity we mainly provide free holiday accommodation and ask the service family to cover travel, insurance and other holiday expenses. However, we also organise group holidays which are usually fully sponsored by the property donor and/or regimental group sponsoring the Service families attending the trip.

We offer emotional and practical support to families facing challenging and complex needs, often finding family life overwhelming. Underpinning our work is the nurture and protection of children and the improved resilience of the family.

Our weekly home-visiting service provides free and confidential outreach support to families in their own homes, delivered by trained and supervised volunteers who are carefully ‘matched’ with the families they help. Through our support, we equip families to develop life skills in order to realise their full potential and make the best of their opportunities.

Home-Start Hampshire has an established history of supporting families in the Armed Forces, meeting the discrete needs of both serving and veteran families ensuring the best possible outcomes for children and families. By supporting families early on, we give children the chance to grow up with prospects rather than problems.

We provide practical and emotional support for Armed Forces Families who are experiencing isolation and loneliness, those who are disadvantaged through lack of community integration or frequent changes in education settings, and those disadvantaged through poor physical, emotional and mental health.

The one-to-one support is tailored to the families’ needs and is often supplemented by an opportunity to attend group activities and parenting courses. Our primary aim is to keep families together, prevent crisis or possible family breakdown and prevent the need for welfare or statutory intervention.

Families of service personnel move around frequently and it can often be tough to put down roots or make new friends, particularly when loved ones are away for long periods of time.

Research shows that singing in a choir helps to alleviate stress and contributes to an improvement in isolation, anxiety and depression. The Military Wives Choirs therefore have a vital role to play by bringing women in the military community together to sing.

As a registered charity, the Military Wives Choirs is now made up of a network of 75 choirs and more than 2300 members based across the UK and in British military bases abroad, including Cyprus, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Choirs are tri-service and not just open to wives of serving personnel – anyone with a military connection can join, empowering women from across the military community.

Every new posting for women in the military community is as daunting as it is exciting, but knowing that you have a choir to go to in your new location where you know the songs and even some of the people can be a real lifeline. That’s why, whilst each local choir has its own identity, all are run in a very similar way with shared music, a fun and friendly ethos and lots of ‘cross-network’ projects and activities.

The Military Wives Choirs is an independent charity and subsidiary of SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity. As part of the SSAFA family, the Military Wives Choirs work side by side SSAFA’s mission to relieve need, suffering and distress amongst the Armed Forces, veterans and their families in order to support their independence and dignity as a charity run by, for and with women in the military community.

By supporting the Military Wives Choirs, you are helping women in the military community to sing, share and support one another and feel stronger together.

We bring women in the military community closer together through singing.

Our members help one another through the bad times, celebrate the good times and all of us sing our way through it together.

We welcome women, from serving personnel’s partners to veterans’ wives, from those who work in their local military community to those who serve in the military.

Wherever we are in the world, the choirs give each of us a chance to make a difference where we live.
