Our offer is as diverse as those we support. We know that everyone faces different challenges and that everyone’s goals are individual. That’s why our team work with everyone in the way which is right for them.

We give support that ranges from practical advice and identifying solutions that help you stay as independent as possible, to vital emotional support and opportunities to meet others facing sight loss.

Sight Scotland Veterans can also provide specialist equipment free of charge to aid independence in day-to-day tasks – from talking watches, cooking aids and electronic magnifiers, to digital technology such as smartphones or tablets with specialist software for people with sight loss.

The charity’s expert rehabilitation team offer one-to-one assessments and tailored training for specialist equipment and cane and mobility training.

Sight Scotland Veterans also runs two activity hubs for veterans with sight loss: the Linburn Centre in Wilkieston, West Lothian, and the Hawkhead Centre in Paisley, Renfrewshire.

We have strong links into the Rugby League community, through the national governing body (RFL), a network of retired professional players, a network of serving and retired service personnel, and through the England Wheelchair RL and wheelchair Super League.

As 10% of SP come from traditional rugby league areas, this enables us to facilitate support through a non-military route to those in need.

Sporting Force was established to help ex-service men and women make the transition from a life in the military to life as a civilian through social engagement, participation in sport, voluntary placements, training and qualifications into a variety of jobs in the sports and leisure industry. Life in the military is an active life and by working with sports organisations we can offer opportunities that appeal, ignite a passion and help create a new life outside of the services. All the opportunities we offer are inclusive and can be adapted to meet the needs of our disabled veterans. Our veteran centric approach ensures that sports qualifications and employment are successful and relevant to the beneficiary.

A. Each beneficiary will be allocated a Veteran Support Officer at time of registration. A progression pathway will be discussed and implemented. These are unique to each individual but a standard time line would be over 12 months from registration to significant outcome.

B. Initial engagement/personal contact is at an Open Day/Social Engagement event. These can comprise of a stadium tour, match day tickets, sports participation or a meeting with the SF team.

There will be opportunities and offers presented at the open day in relation to training, qualifications and pathways.

We run a 4 week drama activities project each May. This, at the request of our Veterans, leads to the tour of a play devised by the Veterans together with the actors, both professional and volunteer drama students.
Most of the Veterans we work with have mental health issues such as PTSD, and we have considerable success in improving their lives.
We also run weekly drama workshops which have a strong sociable element to them. This means that we can provide support for our Veterans throughout the year, and Veterans who cannot cope with a 4 week commitment can still be involved. We will be working with schools in the Tayside area to create short scenarios that we will perform to the schools in order to raise discussions about mental health issues.
We work in a way that revives skills that our Veterans already possess: courage, a sense of family, communication skills, a sense of humour, focus on a task, team work etc – skills that are in fact all common to drama work. We then add in the creative and imaginative context of the work and staff. All of this takes place in a safe and secure environment that we take time to build.
We work in partnership with Legion Scotland, Veterans First Point, Combat Stress, Step Together, Help for Heroes Band of Brothers/Sisters, Dundee Council and the Dundee and Angus College.
