The Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) Benevolent Fund purchases specialist goods and services for our patients whilst they undertake their rehabilitation programme. In addition to these purchases the money raised provides patients with the opportunity to engage in social activities over the course of their stay at Headley Court. Socialising outside of Headley Court allows them to interact normally in public and forget about their injuries and rehabilitation for a few hours. The rehabilitation benefits are enormous, providing a much-needed boost of motivation during the difficult and lengthy period of their mental and physical rehabilitation.

The DMRC Benevolent Fund provides environmental and social integration opportunities to increase our patient’s exposure to activities of normal life that many of us take for granted. This may be in the form of trauma patients attending sporting events with large crowds, or a patient with chronic pain and fear of outside spaces travelling on public transport and attending a café, developing independence. The charity also provides a wide range of specialist equipment and holistic services including driving lessons in adaptive cars, special seat belts for high level spinal patients, and cardiac pacing machines.

Public generosity and fundraising allows the charity to provide the extra elements of rehabilitation that the public purse does not have the ability to provide. Your valued contribution makes the often difficult and traumatic road to rehabilitation a little easier for our patients. Knowing that they remain in the thoughts of the Great British public is a hugely positive reminder that their selfless commitment to the Armed Forces is repaid when they are injured.

Operation Re-org is the area of our work that has specific relevance to the military community. Operation Re-Org is our ex-military skills for employment programme; it helps veterans who have struggled to find permanent employment because of difficult personal circumstances such as physical injuries, mental health problems, substance misuse issues, homelessness or having a criminal record.

We work with local forces charities to identify veterans who may benefit from our help. The programme, which is led by Terry Morley, a veteran who served with the 1st Battalion King’s Regiment, includes:
– Personalised assessment to identify support needed and establish goals
– Intensive 1-1 mentoring, support and training to build skills and confidence
– Development of a ‘working mind-set’ – essential workplace behaviours
– Job brokerage services to support people into job vacancies followed with 6 months in work support
– Bespoke training packages to support veterans back in to employment including accredited qualifications e.g. health and safety, first aid and CSCS.

The aim of the programme is for veterans to progress into sustained employment and gain long-lasting positive changes in their personal circumstances as a result of having a regular salary and routine, the opportunity to learn new skills, increased social interaction and improvements in confidence and feelings of self-worth.

We also provide additional IAG support services and work with a wide range of employers in the public and private sector to help them recruit armed forces veterans into their workforce.

We are also a specialist provider of employment focused support services for people that have a criminal record, including through the gate support for people that have served a custodial sentence.

We offer emotional and practical support to families facing challenging and complex needs, often finding family life overwhelming. Underpinning our work is the nurture and protection of children and the improved resilience of the family.

Our weekly home-visiting service provides free and confidential outreach support to families in their own homes, delivered by trained and supervised volunteers who are carefully ‘matched’ with the families they help. Through our support, we equip families to develop life skills in order to realise their full potential and make the best of their opportunities.

Home-Start Hampshire has an established history of supporting families in the Armed Forces, meeting the discrete needs of both serving and veteran families ensuring the best possible outcomes for children and families. By supporting families early on, we give children the chance to grow up with prospects rather than problems.

We provide practical and emotional support for Armed Forces Families who are experiencing isolation and loneliness, those who are disadvantaged through lack of community integration or frequent changes in education settings, and those disadvantaged through poor physical, emotional and mental health.

The one-to-one support is tailored to the families’ needs and is often supplemented by an opportunity to attend group activities and parenting courses. Our primary aim is to keep families together, prevent crisis or possible family breakdown and prevent the need for welfare or statutory intervention.
