Legion funds project to tackle loneliness in Nepalese veteran community

Isolation and loneliness issues amongst London’s Nepalese veteran community are to be targeted thanks to a grant from The Royal British Legion.

The £43,000 grant to the Community Empowerment and Support Initiatives (CESI)-UK project will benefit approximately 200 ex-British Gurkhas over the age of 60.

This year-long community support project aims to provide a customised support programme to address isolation and loneliness issues as well as the health and wellbeing needs of Nepalese people in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Giving back to Gurkha communities

Many visitors to Nepal will be familiar with Ghandruk, a popular trekking destination on the way to the famous Annapurna mountain range.

Fewer people will know how the Trust has been helping to develop the town as part of our extensive support for communities in Nepal – giving back to a country that has offered so much to the UK over the last 200 years.

The Long Walk

This year, GWT supporter Andrew Lloyd is taking fundraising to a whole new level, trekking an unbelievable 5,000 miles in aid of our earthquake response.

Today, the farmer from Herefordshire – pictured above training in Norway – set off for Russia to start the first leg of his epic journey.

Meet WWII veteran Dambahadur Thapa

Over 75 years ago, like so many Gurkhas before him, Dambahadur Thapa signed up to serve the British Army.

It was October 1940, and the Second World War was already raging in Europe. After training in India and a tour of the Middle East, Damabahadur was sent to the jungles of Burma.
