The Royal British Legion (TRBL) launches its annual Poppy Appeal.
Today (Thursday 26th October 2017) thousands of volunteers will stand on street corners across the UK, asking the public to support the Poppy Appeal. People wear the paper poppies to remember all Service men and women killed in conflict. In 2016, the TRBL raised £146.9 million for the Armed Forces community. This year the TRBL is asking people to #RethinkRemembrance, and recognise the sacrifices made by the military family, past and present.
The OA has always had close links with TRBL. In 1922 the OA handed its fundraising organisation over to TRBL to form the basis of the Poppy Appeal. In order not to compete with TRBL and other Service Charities, the OA does not raise funds in public collections, but supports the Poppy Appeal. In return, the OA receives 7.5% of the Poppy Appeal street collection.
Lee Holloway, OA Chief Executive Officer, said: “Every year the British public generously donate to the Poppy Appeal. Every pound raised helps to improve the lives of the Armed Forces Community and their families. Without their support, the Officers’ Association would be unable to carry out our work supporting officers and their families.”
