Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) is proud to celebrate the success of the inaugural International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) Hands Across the Sea event, held at HMNB Devonport on 22nd November 2025.
The groundbreaking competition brought together 30 of the strongest UK Armed Forces powerlifters and 30 elite American military powerlifters for a transatlantic showdown in pursuit of the title Strongest Force. Both serving personnel and veterans took part, showcasing not only extraordinary athletic achievement but also deep camaraderie, shared values, and the unbreakable bond between allied forces.
The atmosphere throughout the event was electric, with athletes and spectators alike demonstrating immense pride in the spirit of cooperation and resilience that defines both nations’ military communities.
Petty Officer Wesley McGuinness, the driving force behind the creation of Hands Across the Sea, said:
“Seeing this idea come to life has been genuinely inspiring. Bringing together serving personnel and veterans from both sides of the Atlantic—united through strength, competition, and mutual respect—has created something truly special. This first event has exceeded every expectation, and I’m incredibly proud of every athlete who stepped onto the platform. This is only the beginning.”
Amy Reynolds, RNRMC South West and Wales Engagement Officer, added:
“The energy and pride in the room were incredible. This event highlighted not just world-class strength, but also the unity and shared purpose that binds our Armed Forces communities across borders. The generous support shown for Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity throughout the day was truly inspiring, and it means so much to the serving personnel, veterans, and families we exist to support. Being part of an initiative that brings people together so powerfully—while also championing the work of RNRMC—has been a real privilege.”
RNRMC was delighted to support the event, and thanks all the athletes who helped raise funds during the dinner through some fun games and a luxury raffle. The event so powerfully reflects the dedication, determination, and spirit of the Armed Forces community. Plans are already underway for future editions, building on the success of this remarkable first year.
