FiMT publishes a new policy brief on employment support during transition
Whilst we know that most Service leavers and their families make a successful transition to civilian life, some do not. The Understanding the Transition from Military to Civilian Life report from QinetiQ and RAND Europe highlighted that significant progress has been made in employment support, but there is still more to be done to ensure that Service leavers and their families can achieve suitable, sustainable employment outcomes.
Employment support
There have been a number of significant changes implemented to improve employment outcomes in the Armed Forces community in recent years. This includes auto-enrolment in the Career Transition Partnership and the government-backed employment scheme Op ASCEND. Overall, employment six months after the leaving the Armed Forces was 88% among those who had reported their employment outcomes to the Career Transition Partnership.
However, gaining employment is not always the same as achieving a successful employment outcome. Some ex-Service personnel enter roles below their skill level, experience limited career progression, or face barriers in translating their military skills into the civilian labour market. Employment outcomes also differ between different cohorts within the Armed Forces community.
Policy Brief
This policy brief sets out the barriers to successful outcomes faced by the Armed Forces community from underemployment to in-career preparation, and where changes need to be made to ensure an employment support landscape that works for the whole Armed Forces community.
