Paralympian Joe Townsend visits veterans’ mental health charity

Paralympian and former Royal Marine, Joe Townsend visited veterans’ mental health charity Combat Stress last week at their Surrey based treatment centre to hand over the funds he raised for the charity.

Joe got involved with Combat Stress last year after taking part in the #22PushupChallenge, a viral social media campaign that aimed to raise awareness and support for veterans’ mental health. Putting his own spin on the challenge Joe completed an alternative type of push-up, called planche push-ups and encouraged supporters to donate by adding an extra push-up for every donation. On the final day of the challenge Joe completed over 100 push-ups, a personal best.

Veterans’ mental health charity Combat Stress to host business symposium

Educating businesses about the mental health treatment and support available to the veterans they employ is the focus of this year’s The Military Mind business symposium, sponsored by Thales UK.

Hosted by Combat Stress, the UK’s leading mental health charity for veterans, the event on 9 May coincides with Mental Health Awareness Week and will explain how and why some ex-service personnel and reservists develop mental health issues, and what their employers can do to help support them at work.

Warrington veteran to run the west coast of America in aid of Combat Stress

Warrington veteran, Stuart Repon-Ness, will be running almost 1,500 miles along the West Cost of America to raise funds for Combat Stress, the UK’s leading veterans’ mental health charity.

Starting in April, Stuart will be running 1,447 miles in just 45 days, the equivalent of 55 marathons. The father of four, who works as an injury rehab therapist, is making this journey without a support crew and said: “I will get on the plane with just my toothbrush, my phone charger and my race pack.

Combat Stress, the UK’s leading mental health charity for ex-servicemen and women, has appointed two new directors as the charity reshapes its executive team. Director of Client Services – Carol Smith and Director of Resources – Richard Whitley.

Wirral veteran takes centre stage

Wirral veteran, Alison Williams (41), has become the latest cover star of the Combat Stress spring magazine after the leading veterans’ mental health charity supported her to regain her confidence and rediscover her voice.

Alison, who served in the Royal Air Force for 13 years, was chosen to join Gareth Malone’s Invictus Choir in 2016 and performed at the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games in Orlando, Florida last May.

Scottish veterans at greater risk of deprivation than those in rest of UK

Combat Stress has found that ex-servicemen and women receiving help from the charity in Scotland face higher levels of deprivation than those living in the rest of the UK.

Multiple deprivation in help-seeking UK veterans is a new research paper published on Tuesday 31 January by the leading mental health charity for veterans. It is the first study of its kind in the UK to explore experiences of deprivation in veterans with mental health issues.
