Veterans Work Film to Showcase at National Employer Conference

The series of Veterans Work films highlight the benefits of recruiting veterans, and aims to challenge misconceptions surrounding the recruitment of Service leavers.

‘What does an idea sound like?’ is one of the three films created, featuring Matt Barber, Clare Balding OBE, ‘Judge’ Robert Rinder, Richard Wilson, Nick Knowles, Larry Lamb and Joanna Lumley OBE. The Veterans Work films challenge employers to actively consider employing veterans in order to capitalise on their expertise to fill recruitment skills shortages.

22nd March 2018: OA Event – Project Management Workshop – Swindon

The skills and experience required to manage a project are common within the Forces and many individuals look to transition into a new career within Project Management when they leave.
The day will start with an overview of project management within a business setting, including a review of qualifications followed by a series of presentations delivered by those already working in Project Management who will share their experience and highlight key factors to consider when entering a particular sector; The day will be finished by a Q&A led by HR teams within the PM sector who will be able to provide insight on the application process.

How the Legion’s handy van service helps people maintain independence

The Legion’s handy van service helps ex-Service people and their families with small household repairs and minor adaptations.

The Legion has handy vans in 21 counties across the country, and partnerships with other organisations that offer the same service in areas where we don’t operate. Staff begin to assess properties as soon as they arrive, checking the state of doors, windows, security lights and fences.

Like many in the team, Chris comes from a military background and served for just under 14 years in the Royal Engineers: “I love it. I get to meet some fantastic people and hear all their stories”

Step into Health – delivering opportunities for the Armed Forces community

Step into Health is an initiative which seeks to connect employers in the NHS to people from the Armed Forces community. There is a large population of working age veterans in the UK and this programme is designed to support employers in recruiting from this community and to promote the NHS as an employer of choice. The Armed Forces community includes those at various stages of their career, veterans who may have served for any length of time and their spouses and dependants looking to establish themselves within the sector.

Employers are being asked to make a series of pledges to enable individuals and supporting organisations to discover and take up opportunities for employment and training including apprenticeships.

Walking With The Wounded’s Stody House has been supporting local veterans in Manchester for one whole year…

In February 2017, Walking With The Wounded, in collaboration with Nacro and Mosscare Housing, officially opened Stody House in Manchester. The residence provides temporary accommodation to ex-servicemen and women who are in need of social, mental health and/or employment support.

Commenting on the launch last year, Gary Lamb, WWTW North West Operations Manager said: “By working in collaboration with Nacro and Mosscare Housing, we will be able to ensure that these men and women receive the most comprehensive and effective employment support and mental health care, while avoiding duplication of services.

The Whitehall & Industry Group (WIG), through the Charity Next scheme, leads on arranging secondments into registered charities and social enterprises for Fast Streamers in their 2nd year of the programme.

We are always looking to register charities and social enterprises as hosts for enthusiastic, capable fast streamers for six- month projects.
