Celebrate Brighton Armed Forces Day at Blind Veterans UK

Local military charity Blind Veterans UK is hosting Brighton’s Armed Forces Day celebrations this year. The charity, which supports vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, is bringing together Service charities and organisations in the area, giving a platform to showcase the work they do within the local community.

The special event, which will take place on 1 July, is being supported by military charities and organisations including the RAF Police Association South Downs Branch, SSAFA, The Royal British Legion and the Sussex University Royal Naval Unit.

poppyscotland on the lookout for fundraising help in Dunblaine

Scotland’s leading Armed Forces charity is searching for a new Scottish Poppy Appeal Area Organiser (AO) to lead the fundraising push in Dunblane this year and beyond.

Poppyscotland Head of Fundraising Gordon Michie explains: “We’re looking for individuals, groups of friends, or community organisations that have good organisational skills to step forward to lead this year’s Appeal in Dunblane. Last year, £13,500 was raised in the area, but, without your help, we will struggle to collect even a fraction of that amount.

The reason I’m taking part in the Walk Of America is because in 2006 I was wounded in combat. I lost my right eye and my shoulder. And they fixed me up when I left the hospital and I went back to work. But it wasn’t until four years later that I was diagnosed with a brain injury, PTSD and depression. For all that time I just had no idea why I couldn’t remember anything. I was losing my mind. I would just stay in my house and I wouldn’t want to leave because that was my only ‘safe place’.

Once I was diagnosed, at least I had the answers, but even then I didn’t get help because I didn’t really know where to go.

Barnardo’s to support the families of military detainees

Children’s charity Barnardo’s has been awarded a contract to work with military detainees based in Essex.

The Barnardo’s Essex CAPI service (Children Affected by Parental Imprisonment) will be providing support and advice to families of military personnel who are currently being detained at the Military Corrective Training Centre in Colchester (MCTC).

The grant which was recently awarded by the Ministry of Defence means that Barnardo’s will support families for the next three years.

£2m investment to turnaround turbulent lives

A CHARITY which supports communities, former service personnel, ex-offenders and other disadvantaged groups is investing £2m in brand new headquarters in Durham – placing it at the heart of the community it serves.

County Durham based-Finchale Group, works to support people in their own homes who need help to manage money problems; confidence and mental health issues, address drug and alcohol misuse and resolve issues with housing. The charity also delivers vocational training courses.

Give Us Time is thrilled that Center Parcs have donated fifteen short breaks to our military families in need. We would like to thank them for their generosity and continued support.

The window for applying for one of these breaks closes on Friday 22nd June and we have already been overwhelmed with responses received. We would also like to thank all the other service charities and welfare units that have referred families to us.

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity in Test Valley arranges dream hot air balloon flight for terminally-ill Forces wife

Last year, SSAFA Test Valley were approached with a very special request from Army veteran Steve Kirk, who served in the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment (PWRR). His terminally-ill wife, Marie, wanted to fulfil one of her bucket list dreams of flying in a hot air balloon before it was too late.

Knowing how much this would mean to the couple, the local branch of the Armed Forces charity sprang into action. SSAFA Caseworker Scott Campbell took the lead on this extra-special mission.

After arranging the funds required from PWRR Benevolent Fund, Scott personally upgraded the experience for Marie and Steve.

Blind veteran from Kent with a passion for photography meets hero David Bailey

A blind veteran from Rochester, Kent, has fulfilled a lifelong dream of meeting photographer David Bailey at the Brighton rehabilitation and training centre of military charity Blind Veterans UK.

Ray Munday, 88, attended the event held last month as part of a photography-themed activity week run by the charity, which supports vision-impaired ex-Service men and women. Ray was one of 14 blind veterans to attend the week.

Ray says: “When I was told about the visit my jaw dropped – I was so excited, because I’ve followed Bailey since he shot to fame in the 60s. You could say I’m a groupie, because I love his photography! He’s a great bloke.”
