Nottinghamshire blind veteran to march at Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday

A blind veteran from Nottinghamshire is set to march at the Cenotaph in London this Remembrance Sunday (12/11) with the charity Blind Veterans UK.

Andy Stowe, 61, from Mansfield, is being supported to do this by local Specsavers stores including in Crystal Peaks. The store will be raising money from 6 to 12 November to help send blind veterans, including Andy, to march.

Andy will be marching at the Cenotaph in London with more than 100 other blind veterans supported by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Blind veteran from East Sussex climbs Mount Kilimanjaro

A blind veteran from East Sussex has successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Mark Threadgold, 49 and from Saltdean, says: “It was a brilliant experience and couldn’t have gone better.

“I billed it as the trip of the lifetime and it absolutely was. It was a true privilege to stand on the roof of Africa.”

Mark completed the climb with a company called Charity Challenge, who arranged The Big Red Nose Climb for Comic Relief in 2009. He says: “They were absolutely on the ball, everyone from the top down worked their socks off.

Barry blind veteran to march at Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday

A blind veteran from Barry is set to march at the Cenotaph in London this Remembrance Sunday (12/11) with the charity Blind Veterans UK.

Roger Williams, 71 and from Buttrels, is being supported to do this by a number of Specsavers stores in Wales including his local store in Barry. The stores will be raising money from 6 to 12 November to help send blind veterans, including Roger, to march.

Military charity invites local residents to remember the fallen on Armistice Day

A military charity is inviting local residents to join them for a coffee morning featuring an opportunity to remember the fallen with a two-minute silence on Armistice Day.

Blind Veterans UK, the charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, will be welcoming members of the public to its training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno. Following the two-minute silence, there will be a special performance of the national anthem by Welsh concert soprano, Gwawr Edwards.

Dennis Thatcher, 91 and from Camberley, is being supported to do this by a number of Specsavers stores in the county including in Epsom. The stores will be raising money from 6 to 12 November to help send blind veterans, including Dennis, to march.

Hertfordshire blind veteran to march at Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday

Blind Veterans UK issues its 1000th Synapptic device

Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, has issued its 1000th Synapptic device, a tablet with award-winning all-in-one software for people who are blind or vision-impaired.

Michael Ashman, 88 and from Surrey, received the device, a tablet, while attending the charity’s training and rehabilitation centre in Brighton. In doing so, he became the 1000th blind veteran that the charity has provided a device with.

New research by national military charity shows more than half of the British public do not consider those who completed National Service to be veterans

As the country enters its annual period of Remembrance, national military charity Blind Veterans UK is calling on the public to rethink who they consider to be a veteran in a bid to reach the thousands of ex-Service men and women battling severe sight loss would could be missing out on the charity’s support.

New research released today (30/10/17) and conducted by nfpSynergy, on behalf of Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, found that more than half (54 per cent) of the British public do not consider those who completed National Service to be veterans, and a further 57 per cent of the public do not consider those who served in the Armed Forces but who have never seen active conflict to be veterans.
