Veterans raise a flag for Armed Forces Day

The disabled veterans at The Royal Star & Garter Homes in Surbiton paid tribute to British Service personnel past and present by raising the Armed Forces Day Flag in advance of Armed Forces Day on Saturday 30 June.

The Flag was raised in front of residents, family, staff, volunteers and the local CCF unit.

Earlier in the day, the Home held a ceremony to present new residents with their Armed Forces Veterans badge. Residents who are partners of veterans received a special Spouses badge.

The Royal Star & Garter Homes appoints Director of Supporter Engagement

Caley Eldred has been appointed as the new Director of Supporter Engagement heading up the Fundraising & Marketing Team at The Royal Star & Garter Homes. She joins the Charity, which provides specialist care for veterans and their partners who live with disability or dementia, in state-of-the-art care homes, on 9 July.

Previously the Director of Development at the youth charity City Year UK, Caley has held director level roles at both the food-waste charity FareShare and special care baby charity Bliss, as well as working at Mind and the NSPCC. She is also a trustee of the children’s education charity Nurture UK.

HRH Princess Alexandra visits disabled veterans to mark Solihull Home’s 10th anniversary

Residents and staff were delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra when she visited The Royal Star & Garter Home in Solihull. The visit was part of a day of celebrations to mark the Home’s 10th anniversary.

The Princess was received by the Charity’s Chairman, Major General Tim Tyler, The High Sheriff of West Midlands, Mr Christopher Loughran, and his wife, Mrs Jane Loughran, Deputy Lieutenant Professor Nigel Thrift, the Mayor of Solihull, Mrs Flo Nash, and the Mayor’s Consort, Mr Alan Nash.

Day care service brings local veterans together

The Star & Garter Club, a new day care service for veterans, is helping to tackle loneliness in the Solihull area. The service is provided by The Royal Star & Garter Homes, a charity which provides specialist residential care to veterans and their partners living with disability or dementia.

Norma is a guest who has been attending since the service started. She commented, “It’s fantastic here. Where I live I don’t get to talk to many people, so it really makes a difference coming here and having lots of people to chat with. My family are very happy knowing that I’m mixing with people.”

Army Veteran receives highest French honour for WW2 service

France’s highest military honour has been bestowed on Army veteran, Arthur Ogden. The prestigious Legion d’honneur medal was presented to Arthur for his contribution to the liberation of France during the Second World War. Arthur is a resident at The Royal Star & Garter Homes in Solihull, a Charity that provides specialist care for veterans and their partners who live with disability or dementia.

To celebrate Arthur’s award, the Home organised a tea party in his honour.
