Activity Week in Scotland

There is never a dull moment at the NFA as next week 20 beneficiaries will be heading to Scotland for a week of outdoor activities. Embodying the Association’s mantra of ‘From Comradeship To Challenge’, the holiday is designed to encourage individuals to push themselves and generate teamwork through a range of activities including rock climbing, canoeing, archery, pistol shooting, high-ropes and more. Buckingham Palace Garden Party – Thursday 7th June

The Garden Party at Buckingham Palace is the high point in our calendar and this year demand and interest in attending was greater than ever recorded. We believe this was due to our Patron attending, the increased awareness of the charity following a concerted effort to improve our social media presence and recognition of the significant value our events have on the beneficiaries. This high level of demand led us to increase the invitations to the Garden Party and some 2,500 attended on Thursday 7th June 2018.

The guests represented over 110 military organisations and charities, and 32 different military associated residential homes.

RAF veteran creates Lord Trenchard gin to celebrate RAF centenary

Award winning premium spirits producer HDC (Heroes Drinks Company) have partnered with the RAF Benevolent Fund to create a limited-edition gin to commemorate 100 years of the RAF (Royal Air Force).

Lord Trenchard Gin has been created by military veteran and HDC Managing Director Chris Gillan, who founded HDC after a training injury ended his RAF career. Chris struggled with the transition to civilian life after he was left facing homelessness following a flood which destroyed his property. He turned to the RAF Benevolent Fund for help and their support enabled Chris to turn his life around and inspired him to dedicate his career to giving back to military charities and helping other members of Britain’s Armed Forces community.

British Paralympian launches Tour de Troops 2018

Mel Nicholls, British Paralympian and hand cyclist, launches Tour de Troops, the five-day endurance cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats, along with Councillor Ruth Hatton, Mayor of Tewkesbury Borough and Major Peter Norton GC.

Starting the ride in style, participants and the VIPs met at St. Barbara’s Barracks, Ashchurch, before driving down to Land’s End to start the epic journey which takes place 7 June 2017 to 11 June 2018. The Tour de Troops covers 874-miles in five days and is raising money for the military charity, Felix Fund, who support the Explosive Ordnance Disposal community and their families.

D-Day veterans invited to register for 75th Anniversary

On the 74th anniversary of the Normandy Landings veterans of D-Day are invited to register to take part in commemorations planned for June 2019.

The sailors, marines, soldiers and airmen who helped pave the way for the liberation of Europe have been honoured on the 74th anniversary of the Normandy Landings.

Services of remembrance were held in Bayeux, France to mark 74 years since Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy on 6th June 1944, paving the way for the liberation of France and the end of the Second World War.

SSAFA celebrates 1.25 million hours given by volunteers

Giving the gift of time to help Armed Forces community this Volunteers Week

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is marking Volunteers Week by celebrating its incredible 5,802 volunteers across the country who donated 1.25 million hours of their time last year.

Volunteers are at the heart of SSAFA’s work with the Armed Forces family. In 2017, SSAFA volunteers provided vital support to over 20,800 serving personnel, veterans and their families.

SSAFA branches provide personalised one-to-one support to the Armed Forces community in the area.

Natwest team raise £10,000 for Broughton House Veterans

A former Royal Marine inspired his colleagues in the real estate finance team at NatWest in Manchester to climb Snowdon in aid of Broughton House, the Salford care home for ex-servicemen and women.

Fifteen members of the team climbed the Welsh peak and completed a 35-mile cycle ride across Wirral to raise £10,000 for Broughton House.

Those taking part were aged 23-60 and included the bank’s north west head of real estate Heath Thomas along with directors, regional managers, assistants and graduates.

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity partners with British watch brand Smart Turnout Military watch colours customisable for regiment, 15% of sale goes to charity

This summer, London-based watches and accessories brand, Smart Turnout has announced their partnership with SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. The collaboration hopes to raise vital funds through sales of Smart Turnout’s popular Military Watch. For every Military Watch sold, Smart Turnout will be donating 15% of the sale to SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, to allow them to continue to provide practical, financial and emotional support for both service men and women, veterans and their families.

With Smart Turnout’s founder, Philip Turner, being an ex-Scots Guard himself, the design is heavily influenced by the bold regimental colours found throughout the British Military.

Veterans’ charity has huge success at Worthing 10k

On Sunday 3 June, 55 runners took on the Worthing 10k in aid of local charity, Care for Veterans.

The team, dubbed the ‘Fantastic Fifty’, included staff from Care for Veterans, family members of Care for Veterans’ residents, a serving soldier, and ex-Service personnel.

Tyron Crayford, who is a resident at Care for Veterans, also took part and was pushed around the course in his wheelchair by four of the Fantastic Fifty.
