Appointment of new CEO, Paul Gaffney, Defence Medical Welfare Service

DMWS is delighted to announce the appointment of Paul Gaffney as the new CEO of the Defence Medical Welfare Service, replacing Nicky Murdoch MBE who will be stepping down after six remarkably successful years as CEO.

Paul, who has been with DMWS for the past two and a half years, has taken over as CEO as of 1st of December 2017. He brings commitment, dedication, commercial and business skills to the organisation at a time of change and growth. He will be driving the company to the next level, building on the excellent growth and momentum achieved under Nicky’s leadership.

Three Substantial Grants Are Awarded to the NFA

The NFA were thrilled to receive three substantial grants from LIBOR, ABF The Soldiers Charity and Seafarers UK over the past fortnight. Over the next three years, the Association will receive a total of £294,000 in funding from LIBOR. This, combined with this year’s grants of £65,000 from ABF The Soldiers Charity and £5925 from Seafarers, will contribute hugely towards the work we do over the coming years.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Andrew Pulford our new Vice-Patron

RFEA – The Forces Employment Charity is delighted to announce that Air Chief Marshal Sir Andrew Pulford GCB CBE, former Chief of the Air Staff, has become our new Vice-Patron.

Sir Andrew was commissioned into the Royal Air Force in 1977 and after flying training, joined No 72 Squadron, flying Wessex helicopters. During his distinguished career he flew over 5,000 hours on both Wessex and Chinook helicopters. In addition to the UK and Germany, he saw operational service in Northern Ireland, the Falkland Islands, Lebanon, the Balkans and the Gulf. He also completed exchange tours with the Royal Navy’s Commando Helicopter Force and the Royal Australian Air Force.

Jonathan Sandall appointed as Director of Fundraising at SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is delighted to announce that Jonathan Sandall has been appointed as its new Director of Fundraising. Jonathan will join SSAFA on Monday 20 November 2017.

Jonathan is the former Director of Fundraising at Peabody, an organisation addressing poverty, isolation and vulnerability in communities across London. He has also held senior fundraising and business development roles at Shelter and Make-A-Wish UK.

SSAFA Health Visitor appointed to World Health Organisation role

Kerry Riley, SSAFA Health Visitor for Episkopi Cyprus and Kenya BATUK, has been delivering excellent health care support for SSAFA since March 2017. Her passion is seeing the difference that her work makes to the military community on a daily basis.

After seeing and applying for a new role being advertised, Cyprus-based Kerry has recently also been appointed as Public Health Technical Advisor for the World Health Organisation for a part-time role. This will entail promoting new guidance whilst also running alongside her current vital work with SSAFA.

Help for Heroes and The Prince’s Trust Team programme

Since 2010, Help for Heroes has committed £1,032,846 to enable wounded, injured and sick tri-Service personnel and Veterans to participate in fully funded and bespoke secondments with The Prince’s Trust Team programme.

For veteran Tracy, whose life changed completely when she had a heart attack and stroke at just 35 years old, it enabled her to find renewed purpose.

Research into awareness and the effectiveness of charity trustees in England and Wales. Also includes Charity Commission response and provider perspective.

Taken on Trust: The Awareness of Charity Trustees in England and Wales
The new report (launched November 2017) in partnership with the Worshipful Company of Management Consultants provides the most comprehensive picture of trusteeship in a generation, and recommends that charity boards do more to promote diversity and encourage applications from trustees from non-traditional backgrounds.

The research also finds that charity trustees, who are overwhelmingly volunteers, feel positively about their role and about the personal reward and satisfaction it gives them.

Scotty’s Little Soldiers aims to raise community spirit with new appointment

Scotty’s Little Soldiers, the charity dedicated to supporting bereaved Forces children, has appointed a new Fundraising Manager who will champion volunteering and community fundraising for the charity across the UK.

Tammy Green, who joins the charity as Community Fundraising Manager, will be heavily focused on creating Volunteer Fundraising Groups across the country together with recruiting volunteers to help with a range of support roles within the charity.

Tammy, who has over 15 years’ experience within the charity sector, is keen to speak to people across the country who would be willing to help support a worthy cause, which depends heavily on its volunteers.
