Blind veteran Simon Brown shortlisted in the prestigious Sunday Express ‘People’s Choice’ category at Soldiering On Awards 2017

An Iraq War veteran who was blinded in conflict has been shortlisted in the prestigious ‘People’s Choice’ category sponsored by the Sunday Express in the seventh annual Soldiering On Awards.

Simon Brown, 38 and from Leeds, was nominated for the award by national military charity Blind Veterans UK, which has supported him since he lost his sight.

Forces Welfare Media Team – update

The SSVC Forces Welfare Media Team has been busier than ever in recent weeks.

Reporter Victoria Smith recently filmed with Rick McGillivray, a veteran helped out of homelessness by E-FAN, a Covenant-funded project run by the Defence Medical Welfare Service and the Cheshire & Greater Manchester Rehabilitation Company. Rick fondly remembers his Army career but no longer has any photos from the time. The Welfare Team helped him to appeal on social media which led to numerous messages of support by friends he made in the Army and at school, as well as a number of photos.

Vicki joined Soldiering On Awards Chairman, Tal Lambert MBE, Trustees, Co-Chair of Judges, Debra Allcock Tyler, fellow Judges, Awards Sponsors, Awards nominators, charities and 2016 Award Winners to toast the shortlist of this year’s Soldiering On Awards Finalists chosen in each category; winners will be announced at the Soldiering On Awards on Friday 24th March at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge.

Hosted by General the Lord Dannatt GCB CBE MC DL with the charity’s patron, the Rt Hon Earl Howe PC, in attendance, the evening celebrates the achievements of all of those who have been chosen as finalists by the Award’s Independent Judges Panel. It is with delight the charity welcomes new Cobseo Chairman, General Sir John McColl KCB CBE DSO, to his first Soldiering On Awards event.
