Mission Motorsport Rad Am Ring -24 Hr cycle challenge

Fundraising for Mission Motorsport, next weekend a group of intrepid cyclists will be competing in the Rad Am Ring, 24hr cycle challenge at the Nurburging, in the Eifel region of Germany. Each lap is 26km and includes a 1500 ft climb. Two laps is the equivalent of cycling up Scafell Pyke. Each rider hopes to complete at least 8 laps within the 24hrs and included in the team will be Para-Olympian Gold Medallist Jon-Allan Butterworth, getting his legs back in shape after his Rio gold medal of 2016.

Mission Motorsport – Spa Trek (Nurburgring to Spa Francorchamps – On foot through the Ardennes)

A team of Mission Motorsport staff and volunteers recently completed a motorsport related challenge of their own making, aptly called Spa Trek – a 3 day, 155km trek across former WWII battlefields, connecting two of the most iconic motor circuits in the world.

The walk started by going around the famous 26km Nurburgring Nordschleife race circuit and then setting off cross-country, through the German Eifel, crossing the border, via some overgrown WWII Siegfried Line anti-tank ‘dragons teeth’ defences, into the Belgium Ardennes

MOD launches Defence People Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy

Minister for Defence People and Veterans Tobias Ellwood launches innovative mental health strategy at major international veterans conference

Tobias Ellwood, Minister for Defence People and Veterans, has today launched an innovative strategy to improve the mental health and wellbeing of the Armed Forces, their families, veterans, and Defence civilians.

While rates of mental disorder are slightly lower in the Armed Forces (3.2%) than in the general population (3.5%), the challenge of improving the mental health of the MOD’s entire workforce is an important one.

Dunkirk the movie partners with Contact

Dunkirk opens as 400,000 British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea, they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. George Wagner was one of those young men and after decades of burying the memory of his experience, he opened up to Gemma Morgan (Former Army Captain, Kosovo) and Louis Nethercott (Former Royal Marine Commando, Afghanistan) in the Contact short Film Dunkirk Today.

Alongside Warner Brothers, Contact has produced the short film Dunkirk Today which highlights the similarities and differences across the past 77 years of conflict.

Walking With The Wounded join the team at Hougoumont Farm in Belgium to unearth secrets from the epic Battle of Waterloo.

Waterloo Uncovered is “the groundbreaking charity that combines world-class archaeology with veteran care and recovery”. The project began on the farm in 2015, founded by Mark Evans and Charlie Foinette who studied archaeology together at University College London before joining the army. Both chose the Coldstream Guards, the British regiment that played a vital role in the allied victory at Waterloo.

In 2010, returning from Afghanistan, Mark was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). When the MoD began a project to support veterans through archaeology, this revelation got the friends thinking.

New Forces in Mind Trust funded project: Novel approach to treating post-traumatic stress disorder

A novel approach could soon play a significant role in helping British military veterans overcome post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), thanks to a new Cardiff University research project.

Funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) and supported by Health and Care Research Wales, the study will seek to help veterans who have not responded to current first line PTSD treatments.

The two-year study will investigate the effectiveness of a new therapy known as 3MDR, where patients walk on a treadmill whilst interacting with a series of self-selected images that are related to their trauma, and displayed on a large screen.

Alpine Canoeing in the french Alps – 4 – 9th July & 9th – 14th July

Thanks to funding from Helps for Heroes, we were once again able to take two groups to the French Alps for the most exhilarating trip in our calendar of events – white water canoeing. Based in Vallouise these trips embrace the NFA ethos of “Comradeship to Challenge” and embody all that is great about the NFA; mixing veterans from the Falklands, Gulf War 91 and Northern Ireland with those from more recent conflicts, and bringing those suffering from PTSD, amputees and others with a variety of injuries – including some still serving but undergoing rehabilitation – together as a team.

Ex-Service personnel, employment and mental health: Forces in Mind Trust issues call for research proposals

Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), in collaboration with Centre for Mental Health and King’s Centre for Military Health Research, has issued its second highlight notice under its multi-million pound Mental Health Research Programme, a five year programme established to encourage high quality research in the field of veterans’ and their families’ mental health.

The aim of this highlight notice is to encourage applications through the Mental Health Research Programme (MHRP) that propose innovative ways to identify, evaluate and/or propose new methods to address employment rates of former Services personnel with mental ill-health.
