Lord Mayor and Lord-Lieutenant of Bristol welcomed on board HMS Bristol

The Lord Major and Lord-Lieutenant of Bristol were special guests of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) at HMS Excellent last week.

The Right Honourable Councillor Lesley Jones and Mrs Peaches Golding OBE were given a tour of the RNRMC’s offices before being welcomed on board their city’s namesake HMS Bristol by Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Commander David Price.

March in March for veterans’ mental health charity Combat Stress

Put your best foot forward this March in aid of veterans’ mental health charity Combat Stress, as they seek to raise money to meet the staggering increase in demand for their specialist services.

In the last ten years, the number of former servicemen and women with mental health problems who have contacted the charity for treatment has risen by 143% – from 994 in 2006/7 to 2,420 in 2016/17. The NHS, Ministry of Defence and Combat Stress’ own research forecast that demand for veterans’ mental health services will continue to rise over the next decade.

Alert for charities – use the regulated financial sector

The UK’s three independent regulators of charities (Charity Commission for England and Wales, Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator and Charity Commission for Northern Ireland) are issuing this alert to charities to advise that the regulated financial sector should be used.
It applies to a charity when it receives, holds, moves or uses money, particularly those moving funds internationally.

A musical with a difference!

A musical is coming to Worthing and entertainment doesn’t get bigger than this. ‘The Grand Rehearsal’ promises to be big fun with music and dancing, where the audience is part of the show – a bit of drama, sing-alongs, dancing and great audience participation!
The show, which will be fun for all the family, will be on at the Emmanuel United Reformed Church, St Michael’s Road, Worthing, on Thursday 22 March at 7.15pm, and then Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 March at 4.00pm.

What is it like to work for a charity?

In a recent webinar, Simon Allen, OA Chief Operations Officer, shared his experiences of working in the charity sector.

Charities vary considerably in size, values and culture, so you need to choose a charity whose purpose you believe in.

A larger charity will generally have more roles available, higher salaries and be better resourced. However, these charities can be more bureaucratic and the roles more specialised. In smaller charities, employees will likely be generalists, have lower salaries and fewer opportunities for career progression, but can often make a greater individual impact.
