New guidance issued to NHS England commissioners to strengthen patient and public participation

A new guidance document on patient and public participation in armed forces has been published. The new framework is part of a suite of documents developed to strengthen patient and public participation in all of NHS England’s direct commissioning activities.

The new participation framework for Armed Forces provides practical guidance on the best ways to involve patients and the public in different services.

Wirral veteran takes centre stage

Wirral veteran, Alison Williams (41), has become the latest cover star of the Combat Stress spring magazine after the leading veterans’ mental health charity supported her to regain her confidence and rediscover her voice.

Alison, who served in the Royal Air Force for 13 years, was chosen to join Gareth Malone’s Invictus Choir in 2016 and performed at the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games in Orlando, Florida last May.

The Royal British Legion awards grant to support carers in the Armed Forces in Wiltshire

A grant of £29,489 from The Royal British Legion to Wiltshire charity, Carer Support Wiltshire (CSW) will provide support for unpaid carers in the Armed Forces and veteran communities. The money will fund the charity, Armed Forces Family Support Project and will focus on the early identification and recognition of carers with military connections and help to access services, funding and training.

CSW support worker, Catherine Duncan has a specialist understanding of the issues surrounding forces families and will be drawing on her experience as a military wife to identify and support those who are caring for a loved one. A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a family member or friend who cannot manage without their support. They might look after someone with a physical disability, long term health condition, mental health issue or a problem with substance misuse.

FiMT publishes two new reports on its website

‘Life Transitions: What can be learnt across sectors to better support individuals when they undergo a life transition?’

In November 2016, FiMT partnered with St George’s House to deliver a consultation to explore how transition is approached and managed in different settings and sectors. These are examined from three different perspectives: the individual experiencing the change; the network of family and friends around the individual; and wider societal stakeholders.

New Police Welfare Service launched in Hampshire

The Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) is excited to announce the official launch of a Police Medical Welfare Support Service, available to Police Officers, staff or family members of Hampshire Constabulary. The service is independent and complements the welfare support currently offered by the Police Federation and others. It aims to improve recovery time, wellbeing and resilience across the Force.

Warrior Veterans’ and Families’ Courses

The Warrior Programme runs residential training course for ex-Service Personnel. The course is FREE to participants with accommodation and full board included.

The Warrior Programme is a personal transformational, motivational and educational course run over 3 days. More than 800 individuals, with over 600 of whom being ex Services and Serving Personnel, have attended the course. Using coaching techniques it enables individuals to take control of their lives, increase confidence, provide motivation and direction to allow them to lead a healthy and balanced life.

Scottish veterans at greater risk of deprivation than those in rest of UK

Combat Stress has found that ex-servicemen and women receiving help from the charity in Scotland face higher levels of deprivation than those living in the rest of the UK.

Multiple deprivation in help-seeking UK veterans is a new research paper published on Tuesday 31 January by the leading mental health charity for veterans. It is the first study of its kind in the UK to explore experiences of deprivation in veterans with mental health issues.
