More than 1,200 fundraisers gathered in London today to take on SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity’s annual 13 Bridges Challenge.
The event saw participants set off from Trinity Square Gardens early this morning before making their way across 13 of London’s most iconic bridges on a 10-mile route through the heart of the capital. The walk offered stunning views of the city, from Tower Bridge to Chelsea, finishing to a vibrant welcome at Eel Brook Common in Fulham, complete with refreshments and entertainment.
With occasional cloud providing welcome shade from the scorching sun, the city provided a beautiful – if challenging – backdrop for the walkers. Volunteers and marshals were on hand throughout the route with extra water stations and encouragement to help keep spirits high in the heat.
The event attracted a diverse crowd, including military families, veterans, serving personnel, and supporters from across the UK. Volunteers, Reservists, and cadets lined the route to help marshal the event and cheer on walkers as they crossed each bridge.
This year’s challenge has so far raised more than £112,000 to help SSAFA continue its work providing practical and emotional support to serving members of the Armed Forces, veterans, and their families so they never have to battle alone.
Verity Harding, SSAFA’s Head of Events, said:
“A huge thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s 13 Bridges Challenge – from our incredible walkers to the volunteers and supporters who made the day so special. The atmosphere across London has been fantastic and the funds raised will make a real difference to those in our Armed Forces community who turn to SSAFA for support.”
13 Bridges is over for this year, but SSAFA has challenge events and other ways to support the charity all year round. To find out more, search for “SSAFA events”.
