Blesma member Mick Foulds, 73, a double below-knee amputee, and his wife Sue recently celebrated Sue’s 65th birthday in a unique way – by turning the party into a fundraiser for Blesma, the Limbless Veterans charity.
Central to the celebration was ‘An Unexpected Guest’, a children’s book by author Louise Shaw that features an amputee fairy named Feverfew, inspired by Mick himself. Louise creates stories designed to inspire curiosity, celebrate diversity, and spark meaningful conversations.
In the book’s foreword, Mick shares:
“As a real-life amputee, dependent upon my prosthetic legs to walk, I am honoured to be the inspiration for Feverfew, who demonstrates resilience and doesn’t allow his disabilities to stop him from doing anything.”
He adds:
“As a real life amputee, dependent upon my prosthetic legs to walk, I am honoured to be the inspiration for Feverfew who certainly demonstrates resilience, and doesn’t allow his disabilities to stop him from doing anything!”
The party featured entertainment including an afternoon singer and an evening rock band, along with a raffle, auction, and sale of Blesma merchandise, raising approximately £1,200 for the charity.
Mick and Sue are delighted that a portion of lifetime sales from ‘An Unexpected Guest’ will also be donated to Blesma, helping the charity continue its vital work supporting injured veterans and their families.
Despite his disability, Mick continues to live life to the fullest, enjoying horse riding and motorbiking, and remains an inspiring figure to all who meet him.
