Over 50 FANYs took part in the very first Lady Mayor’s Show in London on Saturday 8 November.
The 697th Lord Mayor of London will be Dame Susan Langley DBE and she is only the third woman to hold the post in over 800 years, and the first ever to be titled the ‘Lady Mayor of London’. The new Lady Mayor took office in the Silent Ceremony on Friday 7 November and then the Lady Mayor’s Procession conveyed her to Westminster to swear loyalty to the crown today.
FANYs took part in the walking with four FANYs on horseback in vintage uniforms to highlight the origins of the FANY who were originally trained as nurses on horseback to tend to those wounded on the frontline. Members in the walking procession were dressed to demonstrate our modern day role, the Corps is on call 2/7, 356 days of the year to provide vital support in times of crisis. The FANYs on horseback wore original 1907 uniforms with some riding side-saddle as would have been standard at the time as a nod to our heritage – as one of the oldest and most highly decorated all-female units in the UK.
