Job Purpose

  • Ensure Help for Heroes builds visibility, income and engagement across communities by leading the strategic development of our community and engagement strategy to grow income sustainably for the long term through building community engagement utilising all channels, including a strong and engaged volunteer base who can help us achieve our goals.

Accountabilities

  • Accountable for generating sustainable income by building a strong forward-facing portfolio of activities within community and events
  • Utilising insight, audience knowledge and best practice to develop a multi engagement strategy including building digital engagement and strong stewardship to grow supporter value
  • Leading the development of and supporting a strong engaged volunteer base that can help achieve Help for Heroes vision through fundraising and action

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of a strategic 3-year plan to achieve long term sustainable income and engagement across communities, including through our events portfolio
  • Utilise a test and learn approach to growth including effective use of insight to develop the strategy, being aware of the changing context of communities and citizenship in developing plans
  • Identify and develop new products to deliver sustainable income and engagement across the portfolio
  • Development and implementation of a multi-channel approach with a specific focus on building long term profitable relationships with a broad range of community groups and businesses
  • Lead the development of a fundraising volunteers strategy, building a strong base to effectively partner with regional fundraising teams on delivering the community fundraising plans and be engaged in the Charity campaigns enabling action and visibility in communities
  • Leading the relationship with Marketing, ensure all products and campaigns are clearly briefed, taking into consideration audiences with clear outcomes and campaigns to achieve targets.
  • Ensure activities align with wider Charity activity to achieve greatest impact
  • As part of the Leadership team, represent and work strategically with other Heads of within Commercial and across the Charity, building collaboration
  • Manage, support, develop and coach direct reports to deliver on the agreed strategy, in line with Help for Heroes policies
  • Overall management and ownership of budget, including the development of forecast tools and pipeline models, risk mitigation and business cases for additional investment and resource as required
  • Working across Help for Heroes to develop relationships, processes and opportunities with colleagues which deliver the best outcome for the charity as well the function
  • To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of H4H including an understanding of existing and future Recovery plans
  • To keep abreast of charity law and fundraising developments including GDPR best practice across the charity sector by liaising with fundraising staff in other organisations, undertaking training and abiding by the Charities Act and IOF code of fundraising practice

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience of fundraising including within Community and Events
  • Strong and experienced line management manager with direct experience of working in a dispersed environment geographically
  • Track record of growing income and engagement
  • Experience of building action through communities and engaging volunteers
  • Demonstrable experience of building a strong and motivated volunteer base to support fundraising and engagement building in the Community
  • Experienced at building strong relationships with corporates and community groups to be able to deliver income, engagement and visibility of Help for Heroes in the Community
  • Able to lead, coach and motivate your direct team, influence and work with peers across the charity
  • Commercial acumen including managing budgets, delivering against targets, managing risk
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines in a dynamic environment, often with changing and competing priorities
  • Experience of working at a strategic leadership level with colleagues to lead strategy development
  • Understanding of Help for Heroes supporters, beneficiaries, values and culture
  • Ability to communicate and influence senior stakeholders
