Injured Cumbria veteran pulls van in record-breaking challenge for SSAFA

Former Coldstream Guardsman Greg Dunnings is taking on a unique and gruelling challenge on Saturday 30th August 2025— attempting to break a Guinness World Record by pulling a van for the greatest distance in 24 hours, in aid of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, The Coldstream Guards Charity and The Fire Fighters Charity.

Greg, 34, was born and raised in Preston, Lancashire, and now lives in Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria. A veteran of the Coldstream Guards, Greg served for five and a half years before being medically discharged following injuries sustained in an IED blast during Operation Herrick 11. The blast left him with serious lower leg injuries and a knee held together with screws.

Since leaving the military, Greg has gone on to serve with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service for over seven years and is currently based at Preston Fire Station on Green Watch.

Greg commented: “My grandad served in the Grenadier Guards, and my older brother Zak was in 3 Para — so giving back to the Armed Forces community means everything to me. SSAFA was there for me when I needed help, and I want to make sure they can be there for the next person too.”

This challenge — pulling a van continuously around a 1km loop at Carlisle Lake District Airport — is a childhood dream brought to life with grit, determination, and purpose.

Greg Said:

“I’ve always wanted a Guinness World Record. My grandparents bought me the book every Christmas. But I wanted to do something worthwhile — not just sit in a bath of beans! After ultra-marathons, carrying a rowing machine around the Yorkshire Dales’ Three Peaks, and winning Gold at the Invictus Games, I’ve learned that I’m good at suffering — and this record is all about suffering.”

Despite recent training setbacks and a few persistent injuries, Greg remains determined to see it through.

“I ran the Manchester Marathon in April and have been training by dragging a massive tyre around my local rugby club,” Greg continued. “Training’s not been ideal due to a few niggles, but I’m used to pushing through. This is about raising money for three brilliant charities — SSAFA, The Coldstream Guards Charity and The Fire Fighters Charity — and showing what’s possible when you don’t give up.”

The event will take place at Carlisle Lake District Airport where Greg will walk laps of a 1km route while pulling a van generously supplied by Kirkby Lonsdale Motors. Kieron from Peacock Precision Services kindly carried out the ground survey.

Greg has already managed to raise £1000 for each charity but wants to raise even more. Well-wishers are welcome to attend and show their support throughout the challenge. Click here to donate or visit: https://www.justgiving.com/team/gregdunnings.
