Career transition from the military is rarely straightforward. Service leavers bring exceptional leadership, resilience, technical expertise and operational judgement to the civilian workforce. The challenge is rarely capability. It is translation and direction.
As part of National Careers Week, the White Ensign Association (WEA) is highlighting Career Compass, its innovative digital platform designed specifically to help Service leavers, reservists, veterans and family members approach career change with clarity, structure and confidence.
The WEA’s Career Compass delivers a guided journey of Discover > Prepare > Connect. It begins with structured self-discovery, encouraging individuals to reflect on their motivations, values, strengths and preferred working environments before exploring industries, roles or disciplines. From there, it progresses to CV optimisation, intelligent vacancy matching and targeted interview preparation.
By starting with what genuinely matters to the individual, rather than assumptions about what a particular rank or trade should do in ‘civvy street’, the platform supports sharper positioning, more focused applications and better aligned career decisions.
Initially launched in April 2025, Career Compass has evolved through structured testing, behavioural insight and user feedback. Real engagement data and lived experience from the Naval community have shaped its refinement, maturing it into a more powerful, insight-led and intelligent transition system aligned to operational reality.
Since launch, almost 400 members of the Naval community have engaged with Career Compass, with average monthly uptake doubling in early 2026. This reflects clear demand for structured, digital-first transition support.
Lieutenant Colonel John Middleton RM is using Career Compass during his transition. He said:
“I didn’t realise how expansive Career Compass was until I started exploring it. After I built a profile and uploaded my CVs, the platform directed me towards the roles that aligned with my skills and experience, saving a huge amount of searching and scrolling time.
“The AI tool proved really helpful in quickly refining my CV for particular roles, highlighting shortfalls and offering passages of text as an alternative which you can tailor to suit your own style or approach. If you want, you can then apply for the role through the Career Compass platform.”
Career Compass was conceived and led by Adam Marchant-Wincott, Chief Operating Officer and himself a veteran, in collaboration with a technology team drawn from the Naval community, dtSquad. Their lived experience shaped both the structure and philosophy of the platform.
The development of Career Compass has also been supported by a £30,000 grant from the Veterans’ Foundation, enabling the advancement of its pioneering AI-driven functionality designed specifically for the Naval community.
Adam said:
“We created Career Compass to help individuals make smarter, evidence-based decisions in transition. It brings structure and confidence to what can otherwise feel uncertain.
The digital platform supports the Naval community in defining what they want next, identifying where they will thrive and translating Service experience into language that resonates with civilian employers; an intuitive and coherent pathway that does not currently exist elsewhere.”
The WEA is trusted by Naval Command to deliver independent transition guidance and support personnel to leave well. Career Compass strengthens that commitment by integrating structured digital capability with personalised support, helping those leaving the Naval Service approach their next chapter better prepared and better informed.
Career Compass sits at the centre of the WEA’s wider employment support, which includes one-to-one consultation, mentoring, a busy Job Board and direct engagement with corporate partners recruiting from the Naval community.
As the principal Naval charity supporting transition, the WEA combines digital innovation with trusted, independent guidance to help members of the Naval community navigate change with clarity, direction and confidence.
