Tell us about your organisation…
The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) is the charitable arm of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) who commemorates the 1.7 million Commonwealth casualties from the First and Second World Wars. The CWGC cares for the cemeteries, memorials, graves, landscapes and records at 23,000 locations and in more than 150 countries and territories around the world.
Founded in 2017, the CWGF’s objective is to engage and educate the public – particularly the young – about the history of the world wars and the important and ongoing work of the CWGC by sharing the stories of the individuals we commemorate, ensuring that their memory and sacrifices are never forgotten. The CWGF supports a programme of educational, public engagement and volunteering activities in the UK and abroad, engaging new generations with our work.
How does your organisation support the Armed Forces Community?
The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) plays a vital role in supporting the Armed Forces community by fostering remembrance, education, and engagement. Through partnerships with organisations such as the RAF Air Cadets, CWGF has enabled thousands of young people to research local war casualties and connect with their heritage. CWGF collaborates with the National Museum of the Royal Navy, National Army Museum, and RAF Museum to deliver award-winning digital events marking VE and VJ Days. It also works with the Royal British Legion to share First World War stories and supports Armed Forces Week through initiatives like the “In the Footsteps of Our Forces” virtual walk. CWGF regularly delivers talks and tours for veterans and service personnel, including cadets and Blind Veterans UK. As part of a DCMS working group, CWGF contributes to national commemorations, ensuring the Armed Forces community is honoured and remembered across generations.
What makes you proud of the work in the sector?
At the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF), we are proud to be part of a sector that honours service and preserves the legacy of those who gave their lives in conflict. The service charity sector is built on compassion, resilience, and a shared commitment to remembrance and support. We’re inspired by the diversity of organisations working tirelessly to ensure that no story is forgotten.
How does being a Member of Cobseo help you to do your work?
At the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation, being a member of Cobseo means being part of a powerful network that shares a common mission: to support the Armed Forces community with dignity, respect, and lasting impact. For us, that means keeping the memories alive of the servicemen and women of the Commonwealth who lost their lives in the two World Wars.
