Meet Cobseo’s Members: Introducing Mode Rehabilitation

Tell us about your organisation…

We are a mental health charity that offers psychological and psychosocial supports the Armed Forces Community, families and carers through counselling and mental health intervention. We provide a single point of access to counselling and support through a range of psychological therapy services and mental health treatments that are tailored to individual’s unique needs and provide free services to serving military personnel (male and female) and the armed forces community, including veterans, families, and young people. We operate as a mental health and physical health including crisis support. We take referrals from the local Stockport organisations and regional as a first responder service.

We are a first responder service for the NW Emergency Ambulance Mental Health Service. Mode Rehabilitation was the first organisation in Stockport to become a COBSEO and ASDIC member, the first to become a military drop-in centre, the first to provide mental health services to the armed forces community, and one of the first organisations in Stockport to become a member of the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC). Mode is also in partnership with The Veterans’ Foundation, Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPSYCH), British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), British Association of Brain Injury & Complex Case Management (BABICM), Quality Network for Veterans Mental Health Services (QNVMHS), British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP), North West Ambulance Service (NWAS), Groundwork, Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA). We work in partnership with the Ministry of Defence through our recent programmes, and we have also provided support to local cadet squadrons (Royal Air Force Cadets and Stockport Sea Cadets). We have also taken part in the Woodbank Park event held by Order of The Knights of St. Mary of Bethlehem, including discussions of our separate future projects regarding temporary accommodations for the armed forces community with a focus on recovery.

Mode have been accredited by RCPSYCH, for Quality Network for Veterans Mental Health Services since November 2024, and we were awarded with Veterans Aware accreditation by the NHS in February 2025. We were awarded the Prestige Award “Veteran Rehabilitation Clinic of the Year” in 2024/25, and we were awarded Armed Forces Covenant Gold Award in September 2025. Our CEO is a 12-step recovery advocate, demonstrating her leadership qualities through innovative, evidence-based projects that support through MODE triage, mental health, and physical challenges. Our service leaver support programme – “Resilience to Civilian Life” has helped some of our most hard to reach individuals through our Family Focus Programme, which is funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Trust. We are very proud of the dedication and 100% commitment from the diligent and compassionate team who are determined to see change and the highest standard of excellence.

How does your organisation support the Armed Forces Community?

We provide tailored psychological and wellbeing support, grounded in evidence-based frameworks such as Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) and the Method of Levels (MOL). Our work bridges academic research with real-world application, empowering veterans and their families to explore internal conflicts, overcome stigma, and access sustainable pathways to recovery, through personal and meaningful goals tailored to the individual.

In addition to direct support, we deliver training and resilience consultancy for organisations employing veterans, such as those in the construction and engineering sectors. We have been helping them to create inclusive environments that recognise military values, promote mental health, and reduce suicide risk.

We also collaborate with local authorities, charities, and clinical partners to build a coherent support network that meets the needs of the Armed Forces community across the UK.

What makes you proud of the work in the sector?

Firstly, I am proud, that with personal, professional, and academic experience of struggles and accomplishment including learning to walk and overcoming alcoholism, I was given the gift of desperation, and I am proud to stand alongside veterans and their families, witnessing their courage, resilience, and capacity to rebuild purpose even after deep loss or trauma. Similarly, I am proud that I am blessed in this life to meet some of the most inspirational and accomplished individuals who have endured unimaginable suffering. Our greatest pride comes from creating spaces where individuals feel seen, understood, acknowledged, and empowered to speak freely about their experiences without fear of stigma.

We take pride in our collaborative ethos, uniting research, lived experience, and community practice, including the gift of insight and resilience. In this it has been a journey of epic proportions that has allowed me to contribute with an incredible team, and to be part of the growing movement that redefines help-seeking as a sign of strength, not weakness. Each story of recovery and reconnection affirms our belief that meaningful change begins with empathy, integrity, and respect. Finally, for every man and woman who fell, we will continue to give to this cause.

How does being a Member of Cobseo help you to do your work?

Membership in Cobseo strengthens our ability to collaborate, learn, and advocate effectively for the Armed Forces community. It connects us with a national network of trusted partners, enabling joint initiatives, shared learning, and access to strategic guidance.  It makes us proud to be part of something meaningful, and on personal note, meeting Graham Jones, (before he passed way back in 2012) makes me remember the humble beginnings when he advised me to go and build the vision and establish and come back. Sadly, he was not here when I returned, but he took away a funny shared story and experience, and he shared the ‘tiny acorns of a dream of an oak tree’ – thank you Graham!

Through Cobseo, we are better positioned to amplify the voices of those we serve, influence positive change in policy and service delivery, and contribute evidence-based insights from our ongoing research and frontline practice.

Being part of this collective ensures that our work remains aligned with national priorities while preserving the authenticity and community focus that define our mission
