About the charity

Established in 1825, the Naval Children’s Charity provides financial and holistic support to the dependants of serving and ex-serving personnel of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, QARNNS, WRNS, Reserves and Royal Fleet Auxiliary. Based in Portsmouth they support children across the UK and internationally.

Support includes grants to cover the costs of essential items such as school uniform, clothing, groceries as well as specialist items such as disability equipment, SEN support and assessments and more. Background to appointment

Following a year of strategic review, a new working name and brand we are looking to ensure our caseworking team is robust, at full strength and we can develop and expand our support to our children.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Welfare and CEO the caseworker will join our small and busy team at our offices in Portsmouth. Caseworkers provide support and advice to eligible individuals in line with the policies of the Naval Children’s Charity. They work closely with other organisations to ensure that children and families receive appropriate and prompt support.

The role of caseworker is to assess the needs of the children and family and provide recommendations and support for appropriate assistance to the Head of Welfare and CEO. This includes financial assistance for welfare needs, advice and support to families in the management of personal affairs and finances, and assessment of child specific needs. Caseworkers should be empathetic and non-judgmental.

We are looking for someone with professional experience as a caseworker / family support worker and with a qualification or evidence of previous experience of working with Serving Personnel / Veterans / children in a support capacity. Detailed and current knowledge of the benefits system is considered essential for the role along with an empathetic nature, excellent communication skills, attention to detail and IT literacy including knowledge of MS Office 365 and Teams. Caseworkers will receive induction training both in house and externally to include use of the bespoke CMS (Casework Management System) used by the Armed Forces Charity Sector. The role is subject to DBS checking. It will require some home visits and travel around the UK so you will need to be in possession of a full UK driving licence and have access to your own vehicle.

  • Salary £26,000 – £28,000 per annum
