West Sussex veteran to take on 100 km challenge for military charity

A veteran from West Sussex is currently training to compete in a 100km walk from London to Brighton for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Dan Baldwin, 41 and from Worthing, will be taking part in the challenge with his friends Peter, Neil, Huw and Gary. He explains: “Gary, Pete, Neil and I were all in the Royal Mechanical and Electrical Engineers (REME) together. In fact, Gary, Pete and I all started the same apprenticeship course at Princess Marina College Arborfield together in 1994.”

Nottingham man to run London Marathon for military charity that supports his friend

A man from Nottingham is training to compete in this year’s London Marathon for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women that supports his friend.

Chris Walker, 42 and originally from Kent, applied after being inspired by friend and multiple Invictus Games medal-winning blind veteran, Jamie Weller. He says: “I’ve been saying for over ten years now that I’d love to do a marathon, but of course, like everyone else, there’s always been a good reason not to.

Bake Off star gives blind veterans a reason to be cheerful on ‘Blue Monday’ at charity event

Sophie Faldo, winner of The Great British Bake Off 2017, surprised blind veterans with a cake and video message at a tea party hosted by a national military charity on ‘Blue Monday’ (15 January). The social event was organised by Blind Veterans UK at its London office to give its beneficiaries a smile on a day hailed as ‘the most depressing of the year’.

Sophie, a former Officer in the Royal Artillery and now a Reservist, baked a fondant cake for the event and recorded a video message for blind veterans in which she spoke of her own time in the Army.

Blind veterans join local champion boxers as part of New Year fitness week

A group of blind veterans have joined local boxers and trainers at the famous Brighton and Hove Amateur Boxing Club as part of a fitness week led by the charity Blind Veterans UK.

Seven vision-impaired ex-Service men and women visited the iconic boxing gym in Hove to train with three of the Hove ABC’s specialists including Scott Welch, retired professional boxer and former ABA Amateur Heavyweight Champion.

A blind civil servant from Barrow-in-Furness is training to complete a 100 kilometre walk for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Adrian Treharne MBE, 46 and born in Catterick Garrison, signed up to the event to satisfy a growing urge to test himself physically. He explains: “For a while now I’ve wanted to do some fundraising that’d allow me to push my body to the limit, and the 100k Yorkshire just seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Military charity challenges brave soles to walk on fire

A military charity is challenging local residents to test their nerves in a daring fire walk.

On Saturday 28 April, Blind Veterans UK will be hosting the Worcester Fire Walk Challenge, a 15 feet walk over hot coals, at New College Worcester. The coals will reach temperatures of 1200 degrees Fahrenheit, 100 degrees more than it takes to melt aluminium.

Cornwall health care worker to take on 100km challenge for charity that supports her father

A health care worker from Cornwall is training to complete a 100 kilometre walk in Yorkshire for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women that supports her father.

Sue Edwards, 49 and from Hayle, explains that the care the organisation has provided her father with fed her decision to fundraise on its behalf. She explains: “He became a beneficiary about 18 months and absolutely loves it. My mum too. They’ve been down to the charity’s Brighton centre three times already and always have a fantastic time!

Bedford blind veteran looks forward to 2018 thanks to support of military charity

A blind veteran from Bedford has praised Blind Veterans UK for the help he has received in the past year after losing his sight. Brian Hill, 89, started receiving support from the charity this time last year.

Brian says: “Since joining Blind Veterans UK I’ve tried all sorts of things I’d written off because of my sight loss. It’s been a great year and I’m looking forward to plenty more adventures in 2018!”

Brian joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1945 and spent the majority of his Service in Germany. He worked in operations, plotting the location of aircrafts and reporting on weather conditions for pilots.

Walsall blind veteran looks forward to 2018 thanks to “fantastic” support of national charity

A blind veteran from Walsall has praised Blind Veterans UK for the help he has received after losing his sight. Geoff Deaney, 70 and from Bentley, started receiving support from the charity this time last year.

Geoff says “Finding out I would become blind was a real kick to the stomach. But over the past year Blind Veterans UK have proven to me that there is still a lot to be excited about. It’s been a fantastic year and I looking forward to seeing what 2018 has to offer.”

A Royal Air Force (RAF) veteran from South Gloucestershire is training to complete a 100 kilometre walk from London to Brighton for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Larry Cauchi, 58 and from Thornbury, decided to compete in the challenge after his wife came across the organisation. He explains: “My wife started a new role as Practice Manager of an opticians this year and wanted to put a charity tin on the counter. After a bit of research, and partly due to my own Service, she opted for Blind Veterans UK.
