Quiz night helps to raise £1,100 for disabled veterans

On Thursday 12 October, 12 teams competed to become quiz champions at the Care for Veterans autumn quiz night, and helped to raise over £1,100 for the charity.

Care for Veterans supporter, Chris Coopey from Carpenter Box, acted as quizmaster. He led the teams through 10 interactive rounds of questions, which included pictures and sound clips.

Care for Veterans residents and their families also joined in the fun and lively quiz.

41% of Veterans have felt isolated research reveals

27% have had suicidal thoughts after leaving the Forces

New YouGov research commissioned by SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity has found that more than two in five (41 per cent) of British Armed Forces veterans surveyed have felt lonely or isolated at some point since leaving the military.

When asked if they have ever felt overwhelmed by negative feelings, a third (34 per cent) of the veterans surveyed said they had. Over a quarter (27 per cent) admitted to having suicidal thoughts after finishing their military service.

Royal Naval Reserve Commander Begins Charity Walk Along Britain’s Coastline

A Commander with the Royal Naval Reserve has chosen to spend the first year of her retirement taking on a gruelling charity walk around mainland Britain’s coastline.

Commander Jane Allen, who is soon to end a 37-year career, marked the beginning of her Victory Walk outside Admiral Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory, in Portsmouth on Saturday 21st October.

Travelling anti-clockwise around the coastline, Jane started the first leg of her solo long-distance walk in Portsmouth on Saturday morning and will continue around mainland UK.

Festival of Remembrance 2017

The Royal British Legion hosts the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on 11 November to commemorate all those who have lost their lives in conflicts.
The Royal British Legion’s annual Festival of Remembrance takes place at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 11 November 2017, the day before Remembrance Sunday. The Festival commemorates all those who have lost their lives in conflicts.
There are two performances, a matinee at 2pm and an evening performance at 7pm, the latter attended by the Royal Family. Highlights of the performance which includes special guest artists, military bands and a drumhead service, are broadcast on BBC TV and radio.

Remembrance Sunday 2017

As the custodians of Remembrance, The Royal British Legion calls on the nation to unite in commemorating Remembrance Sunday at the 2017 Cenotaph Service and Parade in Whitehall on 12 November.
The Cenotaph Service is organised annually by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS), with The Royal British Legion coordinating the poignant March Past.
Each year, veterans participate in the Cenotaph March Past. This year, there’s a maximum of 10,000 places available which will be allocated through relevant veteran associations. If you are an individual wishing to apply for tickets, please contact your relevant association.

Recent academic research by the University of Winchester has indicated that four out of ten service children who have the ability to progress into higher education are unlikely to do so.

Activity Holiday in Majorca Provides Respite

We were thrilled to once again be featured in the Majorca Daily Bulletin following our recent trip to the island with 17 wounded, injured and sick serving personnel and veterans. From 7th – 14th October, servicemen from the Royal Navy, Army took part in a varied programme of events in Majorca. The week was designed to build confidence and provide fun and excitement away from the monotony of the rehabilitation process, with beneficiaries treated to activities such as hiking, horse riding, water caving and climbing. A gala evening at Son Amar – thanks to the fantastic generosity of owner Margaret Whittaker OBE – prompted one individual to declare that the week spent in Majorca was “the best trip he had ever been on.”

School Pupil Raises £1400

13 year old Max Jones has raised an astonishing £1400 for the NFA following his third Classic Car Show. Inspired by his grandfather, Clive – a veteran himself, who has supported The Not Forgotten Association for many years – Max decided to start organising his own fundraising events. Three years ago, Max held his first Classic Car Show and the event has gone from strength to strength.
