Coaching is vital to a successful transition. Leaving the military and starting a civilian career is a huge change, involving more than swapping jobs: you need to find new purpose and decide your next steps. Many Service leavers apply for jobs without fully thinking about the impact, ending up in unfulfilling careers. Coaching helps you gain clarity of thought and action, so you make the right career choice.

At its heart, coaching is a speaking and listening exercise.

Tyne and Wear veteran to take on the Fan Dance Race for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity

A local Navy veteran is taking on the ultimate SAS selection challenge to raise money for the charities that have supported him after being diagnosed with PTSD.

John Mew, 60, from Dinnington in Newcastle is taking part in the gruelling 24km Fan Dance Race, which sees participants run over the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons, Pen Y Fen, not just once – but twice.

John served in the Royal Navy for 12 years as a physical training instructor, ships diver and as a member of the Portsmouth Command Field Gun Crew.

The Call Of Duty™ Endowment opens its 2018 “Seal of Distinction” submissions for US and UK ogranisations

The Sixth Annual Award Consideration Starts Today Until June 1 in U.S. and U.K.

London, UK (May 14, 2018) – The Call of Duty Endowment today begins its application process for the sixth annual “Seal of Distinction” Awards, recognising U.S. and U.K. based non-profits that demonstrate the highest levels of effectiveness, efficiency, and integrity in placing ex-service personnel into high-quality jobs.

The prestigious award for grantees is accompanied by a £23,000 unrestricted grant, as well as the opportunity to apply for future funding. Past beneficiaries include: Goodwill Southern California, Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainer Region, NextOp, RFEA – The Forces Employment Charity, and Walking With the Wounded.

Charity aims to tackle the “kid years” effect

8th May 2018. A children’s charity is to help children whose parents go away for extended periods with an awareness campaign and accompanying storybook. Created by The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Children’s Fund, the Kid Years campaign highlights the impact long parental absences can have on children.

Typically, there are around 56 thousand men and women deployed in the Armed Forces (15 thousand of whom are Naval Personnel), potentially leaving behind their children temporarily without at least one parent. As typical deployments last between three and nine months, these absences can have a profound emotional impact.

The Challenges of Buying a Business

Sometimes it makes sense to purchase an existing company rather than starting your own.

Simon Watson, a former RAF Wing Commander who runs ET Cleaning Services and Swift Cleaners, discussed his own experiences during a recent webinar.

Find an appropriate company to buy, search online or through word of mouth. Dalton Business is a good place to start, as the leading website for buying and selling businesses and franchises. Once you have found a potential business to buy you need to test its commercial viability by doing your due diligence. Remember, you alone are responsible for checking the viability of the business before making the purchase.

How do you network effectively?

Neil Williams, a former Royal Marines officer and now CEO of recruitment agency Crucial Group Ltd, shares his networking top tips.

When I decided to leave the Royal Marines I had no plan other than doing ‘something in business’. Networking was vital in helping me identify and pursue a new career.

At its heart, networking is just a conversation, and the military trains you to be an effective communicator. It gives you the opportunity to meet successful and interesting people, learn from their experiences and find opportunities.

Kindly hosted by Barclays, we will be joined by a variety of local employers who will share their industry insights, and discuss the transition from the military into civilian employment. This is a fantastic chance to hear from officers now in civilian careers and gain some transition top tips. Networking at any stage of your career is vital, and during this event you can make new contacts, hear about opportunities and discuss challenges.

ONWaRD are a free to all networking group hosting monthly meetings in the Manchester. The informal meetings are a chance for officers to network in the North West region and provide support for one another in civilian employment.
