30th and 31st May – World famous Beating Retreat performance returns for 2018

The Massed Bands of the Royal Marines will perform their world-renowned Beating Retreat on London’s iconic Horse Guards Parade on 30th and 31st May.

Only performed every two years, this magnificent pageant of military music, precision drill and colour dates back to the 16th century and is regarded as a piece of living history.

The Massed Bands of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines are a collection of 200 highly-talented musicians comprised of Royal Marines from five individual bands based at Portsmouth, Gosport, Plymouth, Scotland and the Commando Training Centre.

Defence Secretary launches first ever Veterans Strategy and new cross-Government Veterans Unit

Veterans’ homelessness, loneliness, debt problems, and mental health issues will be tackled by the first ever Government Veterans Strategy, announced today by Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson.

The ground-breaking strategy has been commissioned by the Defence Secretary and today it will be confirmed that a new Veterans Unit with input from across Whitehall will be created.

The Veterans Unit will champion the changing needs of the ex-service community and ensure action is taken to meet these.

7th July – RNAS Yeovilton International Air Day

The Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton International Air Day will open its gates on Saturday 7 July 2018 to 40,000 visitors, just as it did over 70 years ago, in 1947 at its first ever Open Day. As one of the Southwest’s largest one day events, the award-winning Somerset airshow offers an action-packed day out for all the family with thrilling flying displays and amazing ground attractions. Over five hours of incredible flying displays will feature fast jets, historic warbirds, helicopters and formation display teams. There are already some rare and exciting aircraft confirmed.

Each year the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity distributes thousands of pounds across naval ships and establishments, ensuring top-quality facilities for Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel and their families.

The principal charity of the Royal Navy, the RNRMC, helps the entire naval fleet, be they officers, other ranks or specialisations. The charity is there from day one and every day after, delivering everything from life changing grants during times of need to smaller operational grants that aide morale and retention whilst at sea.

Memory of WWI hero ‘Boy Cornwell’ honoured with 1000 mile cycle

Serving members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines will undertake an arduous 1,000 mile cycle to honour the memory of Jack ‘Boy’ Cornwell, who died at 16 years-old during the Battle of Jutland.

A group of nine sailors and marines will set off on the VC 1000 Mile Challenge from HMS Vivid on Saturday 12th May and will complete their journey at HMS Raleigh on the 24th May.

The challenging 1,000 mile route will honour the memory of the WWI naval hero Jack ‘Boy’ Cornwell, while raising money for three British charities.

Leaving the Royal Navy or Royal Marines and re-entering the working world after a career in the military can be a daunting process for many. For those who serve, a ‘normal life’ is often sacrificed in order to help protect the country. When serving personnel leave it can be difficult to adapt to civilian life outside the structure offered by an Armed Forces environment.

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) recognise the unique challenges that naval veterans face when leaving the service.
