RAF Association commemorates Battle of Britain 85

The RAF Association is inviting members of the public to mark the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, a defining moment in the Second World War and in the history of the Royal Air Force.

The Association has created a digital tribute wall where anyone can leave tributes, reflections and messages to mark the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

On 15 September 1940, the Luftwaffe launched one of its most intense air assaults. In a day of fierce fighting, the RAF successfully repelled the attack, inflicting heavy losses.

During the campaign, 544 RAF aircrew lost their lives, with a further 312 personnel killed on the ground as airfields came under attack. It was the first battle fought entirely in the air and marked Nazi Germany’s first significant military defeat.

The Battle of Britain is remembered not only for the courage of “The Few” – the 2,945 aircrew who fought in the skies—but also for the immense support provided by “The Many” – ground crew, radar operators, factory workers, searchlight operators and countless civilians whose contributions were vital to victory.

The public are encouraged to not only recognise the heroism of the RAF pilots but also the vital roles played by the wider support network, including radar operators, ground crews, factory workers, WAAFs and countless others across the nation.

Nick Bunting, Secretary General and Group CEO of the RAF Association, said:

“The Battle of Britain was a significant moment in history, not just for the RAF, but for our country. Our tribute wall gives anyone the opportunity to share a message to remember those who sacrificed so much in the defence of our nation, both in the Battle of Britain and beyond.”

Anyone wishing to leave a message on the tribute wall can do so here
