About us

For over 90 years, the RAF Association have championed a simple belief – that no member of the RAF community should ever be left without the help that they need. The RAF Association is one of the leading providers of welfare assistance to the RAF community.  We do this by developing and offering a range of welfare and wellbeing services that aim to provide amazing support to those who most need it. Our services are delivered by our team of fantastic employees, together with a large network of volunteers. Last year, we supported over 85,500 members of the RAF community who required practical, emotional or financial assistance. For the sake of everyone who needs our help, we continue to evolve and innovate to meet new challenges and remain at the leading edge of service provision. We champion the best interests of the RAF community and work together to make sure no one is ever left behind.

About the role

This is a fantastic opportunity for a professional with a history of safeguarding to invest in a charity with a strong ethos around safeguarding governance.  A recent audit by the Social Care Institute for Excellence shows that our journey over the last few years has brought considerable transformation in our work. The auditors highlighted a number of strengths, including a ‘supportive and cohesive senior team’ and the Association has developed an action plan for further improvements. This is a new position within the Welfare Directorate and the Safeguarding Officer (SO) will be responsible for ensuring that the RAF Association (and its subsidiary companies) complies and provides the necessary governance and management oversight of safeguarding policies and the application of UK legislative requirements.

As subject lead you will provide day to day safeguarding advice and guidance to employees, volunteers and members and ensure everyone is appropriately trained and supported in their safeguarding responsibilities with vulnerable adults and children (we currently operate four children’s nurseries). Where appropriate, the SO will refer concerns to the local authority and social care services or to other appropriate agencies.

About you

Whilst knowledge of the charity sector is an advantage, it is not a pre-requisite.  However, a background in either Health and Social Care or education, with a focus on safeguarding is an essential requirement for this role.  You will need to have a detailed knowledge and understanding of safeguarding including relevant national policies, guidelines and protocols.  Ideally, we would like you to be a confident trainer in the delivery of subject training to a wide range of audiences and stakeholders and be able to evaluate the outcomes. If you’re a people person, highly organised, a great communicator and manager of relationships at all levels and have a desire to be involved in something with meaningful purpose, we’d love to hear from you.
