RAF Benson personnel take on gruelling four-day challenge to support RAF charity

From 30 September to 2 October, RAF Benson personnel will take part in the 4x4x48 Challenge to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

The 4x4x48 Challenge is a gruelling endurance event pioneered by ultra-marathoner David Goggins, that tests physical and mental fortitude by having participants run or walk four miles at the start of every four-hour period for 48 hours total, resulting in a combined 48 miles.

This challenge requires significant preparation and is not recommended for beginners, as the continuous nature of the activity can be very demanding on the body and mind.

The event will be completed by 18 personnel from RAF Benson station Medical Centre and Abingdon SMC.

AS1 Alex Parker who serves at RAF Benson said: “We have chosen this challenge for the benefits to our team cohesion and resilience as its demanding nature will directly pull the team closer together. We are currently going through a merger of practices and see this as a great opportunity to pull the team closer.

Alex added:

“I’m proud to support the RAF Benevolent Fund because I’ve seen the real impact they have – quietly, consistently, and compassionately. Whether it’s helping someone through a crisis or simply being there when no one else is, their support changes lives. At RAF Benson, I’ve heard so many stories of gratitude from those they’ve helped. This challenge is my way of giving back and making sure their vital work continues.

Alex continued:

“For all of us taking part, the 4x4x48 Challenge is more than just a physical test, it’s a chance to push our limits, strengthen our mindset, and prove what we’re capable of when things get tough.

“I’m looking forward to the shared experience, the resilience it builds, and the sense of purpose that comes from doing it for a cause that truly matters.”

Wing Officer Fiona Phillips, Group Practice Manager at RAF Benson said:

“What started as me asking a few colleagues to get involved has grown – now around 20 of us from the medical centre are taking part. It’s brilliant to see so many people stepping up for the Fund.

“As a medic, I see so many people who need help, and it’s often the RAF Benevolent Fund that I guide them to. It’s a charity that really makes a difference to RAF families.”

The RAF Benevolent Fund provides financial, emotional, and practical assistance to serving and retired RAF personnel and their families. This includes grants to help with financial difficulty, mental health support, Airplay youth clubs, and more.
