RNRMC – Trustee of The Naval Service Sports Charity

***THIS JOB VACANCY HAS NOW CLOSED***

The Naval Service Sports Charity (NSSC) supports the sporting activities of serving Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel.

It is a charitable company, limited by guarantee, incorporated on 26 July 2007 and registered as a subsidiary charity of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) on 13 September 2007.

The Charity’s funds, which come from personal contributions through a payroll giving scheme managed by the RNRMC, NSSC investments and other charitable grants and donations are distributed as annual grants (approx. £500,000) to support the running costs of Royal Navy Sports Associations, sports development in Naval Regions and the Front Line, coaching fees, support to talented athletes and the health and wellbeing of naval personnel through the NAVYFit programme.

The Charity owns a 96 bed Sports Accommodation facility and employs a Director of Operations who runs the Charity and 7 staff who work in support of the Head of Navy Sport at HMS Temeraire in Portsmouth.

The Charity is currently run by a Board of 8 Trustees, 2 of whom are serving members of the Royal Navy and 6 of whom are not Ministry of Defence (MoD) employees.  The Board is looking for a Trustee who is not a MOD employee but who is likely to have served, who has relevant experience as a Chair/Trustee/Advisor of a Charity, Board of Governors or similar voluntary organisation, and who has a keen interest in sport. We warmly welcome applications from those who are new to trustee/board work as well as individuals who have a proven track record in governance roles. We welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds and are looking for candidates who can contribute greater diversity of representation and thinking to our Board.

The ideal candidate would have a strong background in any of the following areas:

  • Sport Governance
  • Charity/Company Governance
  • Sponsorship
  • Investment Management
  • Human Resources and Employment Law

As a Trustee, the individual will help to ensure that the Charity is run efficiently and that the support given to Sport is well targeted across the Royal Navy.  The majority of Trustee involvement centres on 3 Board Meetings a year held in Portsmouth or online, with opportunity for occasional inter-Board work with other Naval Charities and attendance at Naval sporting events. Trustees serve for a term of three years with the opportunity to serve for a further 2 terms. Trustees are unpaid, but reasonable expenses for travel to meetings and completion of appropriate trustee training can be reimbursed.

More information and application forms can be obtained from Gareth Hughes, the Director of Operations, by email to dofops@tnssc.co.uk or by calling 07712 589776.  The closing date for applications is 21 June 2021 with the intention to interview those selected at HMS Temeraire in Portsmouth on a date to be confirmed in July.
