At the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the home of the iconic Chelsea Pensioners, we are enhancing our provision to local, veteran and academic communities, together with those living with dementia and their carers, and we need a passionate and dynamic Community Engagement & Outreach Manager to join our Audience Engagement team. So, if you are passionate about community engagement and heritage, and have experience in delivering outreach programmes then we have the perfect opportunity for you.

As the Community Engagement & Outreach Manager, you will play a pivotal role in delivering our new activity programme as part of the Soane Stable Block project. This exciting project, made possible by a £3.2million grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, will restore and adapt the Grade II* Stable Block designed by Sir John Soane into an Outreach and Visitor Centre. Your role will be to ensure that local residents, veterans, the wider Army family, including those with dementia and disabilities, are engaged through this unique project.

Your responsibilities will include co-ordinating events during the restoration programme, developing and managing heritage engagement activities, workshops, as well as specialist sessions for target audiences and Chelsea Pensioners, our resident veteran population. You will work closely with the Head of Military Veteran Outreach, volunteers, stakeholders, and partner organisations to deliver an exceptional and accessible visitor experience. We are seeking someone who embodies our values and is committed to making history accessible to all. Here are some of the skills, knowledge, and experiences we’re looking for:

  • Exceptional people skills with a talent for forging strong partnerships with various audiences and partners.
  • Experience in developing heritage activities and resources suitable for diverse audiences.
  • Excellent written and communication skills to share our stories effectively.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in the heritage and museum sector or a similar setting.
  • Experience in working with older individuals and managing volunteers.
  • Experience in recruiting and collaborating with practitioners for workshops and activities.

This is a full time role working an average of 41 hours per week with occasional evening or weekend work required (time off in lieu provided). Travel may be necessary to engage with the local community and other offsite locations. This position is a fixed-term contract until 31 December 2025.  The salary range for this role is £36,958 – £40,464 pa depending on experience.
