Rear Admiral Mike Wood, Chairman of the China Fleet Trust (the Royal Navy Charity who own the China Fleet Club) and a Deputy Lt Cornwall, visited the team delivering Covid vaccinations at the Club to see the operation in full flow and thank all those involved in supporting the initiative.
Many of the Club’s staff have volunteered to act as marshalls alongside many members of the local community and there were a number of ex Armed Forces medical personnel also giving vaccinations including; Dr Sue Thorpe and Lt Colonel (Rtd) Simon Price who are both civilian medical practitioners at HMS DRAKE, Surgeon Commander RN (Rtd), Anthony Lambert and Jon Carty, a GP from St Germans, Cornwall.
The Admiral was hugely impressed with the organisation and congratulated the team on vaccinating some 400 of the most vulnerable local people on their first day of operations. He stressed the point that although staff at the Club are furloughed they received a real lift from knowing that their normal work place was being used to contribute to and support both the local community and the wider national effort to protect people from Covid 19.
The NHS staff were very appreciative of the Club’s facilities being made available for this very crucial requirement and at the same time could see why the Club with its wide variety of leisure and recreational facilities was so popular with its beneficiaries and civilian members in normal times.
