Seven Veterans enjoy Gliding Club experience

Members have taken to the skies in a thrilling gliding session that had them soaring over the Lancashire countryside.

Seven Members were given incredible views and the experience of riding thermals and swooping through the air courtesy of the oldest gliding club in the country.

The group had a briefing on controls and weather conditions from experts at the Bowland Forest Gliding Club, near Preston, before soaring in the two-seater gliders, which have a 17-metre wingspan.

“It was incredible, and the Members really loved it,” said Catherine Green, Blesma Outreach Officer North West, who organised the event. “They said it was total freedom; freedom from a wheelchair or a prosthetic limb. They had great flying conditions so were treated to some amazing views as they flew above the ground. They were paired up with qualified pilots but had the chance to take the controls for a time during their flights.

“The gliding club is run by volunteers, and they really looked after us. I hope we get a chance to repeat the event next year.”
