Six Key Insights About Becoming a Project Manager

Matt Wright and Freddie Milne, former Army captains and FDM Ex-Forces Consultants, share their top transition tips and how FDM can support your career journey.

1. Networking

Never network for network’s sake. Always have a purpose.

2. Decide what you want from your new role

There are different factors to consider when choosing a role, including salary, location and industry. You must decide where you stand on each aspect, and outline your two, five and 10 year plan.

3. CVs

A CV is not a generic document – it must reflect the role and sector you are applying for.

4. Interviews

Understand what competency, skills and behaviour your interviewer wants from you.

5. Project Management Qualifications

Qualifications can open doors, but the emphasis is on experience. There are different project management training courses, and each has its value. The market leaders are Agile, PRINCE2 and the Association for Project Management qualifications.

6. Early Learning Credits

Remember, Early Learning Credits can be spent after leaving the Armed Forces, so take your time choosing the right course.

FDM Group
The company trains veterans to become consultants for their clients. Participants go through 12 to 16 weeks of training in one of FDM Group’s academy facilities. You then sign a two-year contract with the company as a consultant, working on the site of its clients.

FDM’s Ex-Forces Programme
The programme gives veterans the opportunity to become consultants with FDM. You complete professionally accredited IT and project management training, and receive ongoing support. FDM also has a veteran network, so you can meet other veterans who have been on the same journey from day one.
