SSAFA – Assistant Gurkha Support Project Manager

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a part-time Assistant Gurkha Support Project Manager in the Volunteer Operations department at SSAFA, the UK’s oldest national tri-service military charity.

About the role

This is a great opportunity for a fluent Nepali speaker to assist in providing casework, coaching and teaching, and welfare services within the local Gurkha community in South East London.

Under the direction and guidance of the Gurkha Project Manager, you will assist and support the Gurkha clients who approach SSAFA for help in developing links with the wider local community, assist them in integration, promote relevant activities and help them access local services, benefits and entitlements.

The role will enable you to fully utilise your fluent English and Nepalese communication skills, as well as attend mandatory training courses in relation to the role.

You will act as a SSAFA representative, advocate, interpreter and coordinator of client interviews at the weekly partnership surgeries held by statutory agencies and assist in disseminating information appropriately to the Volunteers and clients, as well as support in training activities. In addition, you will assist Deputy Gurkha Support Project Manager in organizing and teaching weekly English classes.

You will also assist in developing an information system for the Gurkha community in the area.

Requirements

To carry out this role successfully you will have excellent communication skills and be fluent in both English and Nepali with the ability to translate complex information between the languages.

You will have strong organisational, written and IT skills (including using databases) with a keen eye for detail.

Excellent interpersonal skills, understanding and non-judgmental personality, and ability to work as part of a team as well as independently are also essential to the role.
