The evening of 15 January 2026 was highly emotional as Lord Michael Cashman CBE delivered the first public reading of The Etherton Lecture: Lifting The ban.
In partnership with Imperial War Museum London and compèred by actor Russell Tovey, Lord Cashman delivered the lecture, penned by Lord “Terry” Etherton, that sadly he was unable to deliver before his death in May 2025.
With a panel of guests including Ed Hall, Caroline Paige MBE and Lisa Power MBE Lord Cashman read the lecture from his late friend and colleague. A powerful, insightful, work of empathy and compassion discussing the legal and human path to overturning a great injustice.
As promised, the text of that lecture is now available. Fittingly, it is on the website for the LGBT+ Armed Forces Community memorial that is one of the major outcomes of his recommendations in the LGBT Veterans Independent Report.

There is a link to the FaceBook Livestream of the event at the foot of the page and the Imperial War Museum London will also have an edited version of the lecture available shortly.
