The Seafarers’ Charity – Business Development Director

***THIS JOB VACANCY HAS NOW CLOSED***

Salary – Competitive

Permanent, Full Time

London

Thank you for your interest in The Seafarers’ Charity, the leader in maritime welfare grant-making.  For over 106 years we have led the way in supporting those who work at sea.

As an island nation it is not surprising that we rely heavily on the maritime sector – but have you any idea just how crucial it is in the UK?  95% of our trade, worth £500bn per annum, comes and goes via the sea; this could not happen without the work of seafarers.  They are crucial both to our island and to world trade, but they are often forgotten, ignored, or not understood.

We have recently taken a long hard look at our organisation and repositioned ourselves around our strategic aims and how we can best deliver them.   Our strategy focuses our grant funding, advocacy and influence work around the five outcomes we want to achieve and improve for seafarers:

  • Enhanced financial resilience
  • Better working lives at sea
  • Safer working lives at sea
  • Improved health and wellbeing
  • Increased social justice

We have begun to develop programmes of work to sit under each outcome and inform our grant funding. We now need to make a concerted effort to turn those programmes of work into fundable opportunities and hopefully that is where you come in.

Through our unique position, which straddles the entire community of maritime welfare charities, and thanks to an excellent Trustee Board, we have contacts that many charities would love to have.  We are keen that you turn those contacts, as well as new ones that you create, into channels of support to deliver our programmes of work.

Working at the highest level with our executive team and Trustee Board, you will help us frame our work to align with corporate strategies, then assist us to pitch and secure their support.  We envisage you will have marketing and sales experience and know how to pivot work to appeal to corporates and high net worth individuals to align with their aspirations and needs.  You will be expected to manage these relationships and deliver a donor centric approach with a high level of customer service.

You will have a fundraising team of three to manage who will also focus on gaining multi-year trust and foundation support.  Together, you will help develop our ground-breaking programmes of work and more importantly, get them funded to make them a reality.

You will be joining a diverse, friendly, committed team of about 20 staff at London based head office working on a hybrid basis, with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office as the role is crucial to build relationships and also involves face to face meetings.  Additionally, there are regular organisation-wide staff meetings, cross organisational working groups and departmental meetings held at the office to support teamwork and deepen organisational learning.

You will play a crucial part in how we achieve our ambition of improving the safety and welfare of seafarers.  If you join us, you will have the opportunity to make a real impact and be part of our success story.
