Injured veteran Mark Howard hit new heights earlier this year when he crossed London’s O2 Arena in his wheelchair – before taking on the London Marathon just three days later.
The 54-year-old former member of the Life Guards, who was injured in a training accident during his service, has raised more than £500,000 for charities over the past decade through a series of extraordinary endurance challenges. His feats have included completing a marathon on crutches, crossing the Alpe d’Huez Tour de France route, and tackling the Isle of Man TT course using a handcycle.
“I’ve wanted to go over the O2 in my wheelchair for years, but they only have a few places every year so I was delighted to get one,” said Mark, who used the experience to raise money for Blesma and several local charities. “I hope doing these activities will encourage other people to go out and get active, and if I inspire one person then it’s all worth it.”
Alongside his fundraising, Mark also trains and mentors wheelchair athletes, helping others to build strength, confidence, and resilience. His next goal is to become the first wheelchair user to complete the Three Peaks Challenge.
