On 1 July, the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans made its annual trip to Worthing with a convoy of 50 London taxis carrying 90 veterans for a memorable day by the sea.
The annual outing, which began in 1948, remains a highlight of the charity’s calendar. The day started at the village of South Holmwood, where veterans were greeted with sandwiches, homemade cakes, and refreshments, along with a warm send-off from local residents.
Refreshed and ready for the coast, the convoy set off for Worthing, where the taxis were welcomed by the Town Crier and the Mayor of Worthing, Councillor Cathy Glynn-Davis. Guests then enjoyed a traditional fish and chip lunch at Worthing’s Pavilion Theatre, attended by 240 people including veterans, supporters, friends, and fundraisers.
During lunch, the Mayor thanked London’s taxi drivers for giving their time to support the veterans. The charity’s chairman, Colin Mills, addressed the gathering, noting the changing nature of the charity as the number of WWII veterans sadly declines, and reminding attendees that the Taxi Charity proudly supports veterans from all service eras.
The afternoon’s entertainment brought high spirits and plenty of dancing, with performances by singers Annie Riley, Lloyd Ellery, and Jason Allen. A lively atmosphere soon took over, with guests forming conga lines joined by catering staff, creating a truly joyful celebration.
The return journey included a final stop at South Holmwood for a cup of tea and more homemade cake before veterans were chauffeured back home by their dedicated drivers.
Colin Mills, London cab driver and Chairman of the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, summed up the day:
“This trip is at the very heart of our charity’s history. Since 1948, we’ve been bringing veterans to Worthing for a day of friendship and celebration. The incredible support from South Holmwood, Worthing Borough Council, and of course, our volunteer drivers, makes this event so special. It’s a wonderful reminder of the power of community and the bond between veterans and cab drivers. We’re already looking forward to next year’s trip.”
