Burns Night marked with bagpipes and haggis at Royal Star & Garter

Veterans have been treated to a taste of Scotland and the sound of bagpipes as Royal Star & Garter marked Burns Night.

They tucked into a traditional Burns Supper – including haggis, neeps, tatties and a dram or two of whiskey – at each of the charity’s three Homes on Friday 24 January.

Entertainment was provided by bagpipers, while the meal also featured piping in the haggis and a recital of Burns’ famous Address to a Haggis.

Burns Night celebrates the birthday of Scottish poet Robert Burns, who was born on 25 January 1759.

Royal Star & Garter provides loving, compassionate care to veterans and their partners living with disability or dementia. It has Homes in Solihull, Surbiton and High Wycombe.

After the special lunch, residents in Solihull enjoyed hot toddies and other whiskey-based drinks, and took part in a tossing the caber competition, featuring large foam tubes. At High Wycombe, staff dressed in tartan, and in Surbiton, residents enjoyed a presentation on the Orkney Islands.

Royal Star & Garter cares for residents from across Britain, and each year marks national events such as St David’s Day and St George’s Day.

Royal Star & Garter also offers short break stays, and runs a day care service from its Solihull and High Wycombe Homes.
