Team ‘Are We There Yet’ made up of determined teammates Scott and Joe, is preparing to push themselves to the limit in this year’s Race Across the UK challenge in support of Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC).
With powerful personal connections to the armed forces and a shared commitment to mental health awareness, the pair is taking on this epic challenge not just for the thrill of the race, but to give back to those who serve and the families who stand behind them.
The decision to fundraise for RNRMC stems from more than just a desire to complete a physical challenge. For Scott and Joe, it’s about honouring personal connections and family histories that are closely tied to the Royal Navy.
Scott said:
“I’ve struggled with my own mental health, and being partially deaf with deaf family members, I understand some of the barriers faced by service personnel and their families. I also have friends currently serving in the Royal Navy, and through conversations and personal experiences, I’ve seen just how much they sacrifice. Supporting a charity that looks after their wellbeing, and that of their families, feels incredibly important.”
Joe’s motivation is rooted in his family’s past.
“My great-grandad served in the Navy during the Second World War and was the only survivor of three separate ship sinkings. The trauma he went through left him with severe mental health issues. He would often believe he was still at war and that his family were the enemy. He never received any help after the war, and that had a big impact on him and those around him. Supporting a charity that offers mental health resources and long-term support for veterans and their families means a lot to me.”
Race Across the UK will challenge both teammates physically and mentally, but their motivation is clear: to raise vital funds and awareness for those who have served, and continue to serve, in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
