Yately retirement village, Hampshire Lakes, recently hosted a Big Brew Up for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, to say ‘thank you’ for the donation of specialist exercise equipment.
There are 20 Tri-Service veterans living in the village, some of whom are wheelchair bound or have mobility issues. The residents have full access to a small gym and swimming pool on site to support their needs, together with a number of classes and physiotherapy staff to ensure that they are receiving professional help. However, for those with mobility issues, much of the equipment does not support their needs. As a result, SSAFA Hampshire branch undertook research and found a piece of equipment that would allow them to work on their mobility whilst in a wheelchair or sitting down.
Whilst residents had managed to raise £500 towards the cost of this equipment, the overall cost was more than £3,000. SSAFA Hampshire stepped in and covered the shortfall.
Clive Ward, SSAFA Hampshire Secretary said:
“What a terrific bunch at Hampshire Lakes! A great time had by all and £500 was raised for SSAFA at the Big Brew Up. Much more importantly, people were made aware of what SSAFA is and what it can do.”
