Forces in Mind Trust – Evaluation and Exploitation Officer

The Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) was established in 2011 with a £35 million endowment from the Big Lottery Fund to spend over a 20-year period on providing UK-wide support and advocacy for ex-Service personnel and their families to make a successful transition back to civilian life.  The Trust awards grants and commissions research to generate an evidence base to influence and underpin policy makers and service deliverers.

Job Details

Location: Based in Victoria, London (occasional travel and overnight stays may be necessary to support events around the UK).
Status: Full time 37.5 hrs generally Monday – Friday 0900 – 1700
Salary: £34,000 per annum

Overall Purpose
Reporting to the Head of Policy, the EEO will work as part of the Policy, Influence and Evaluation Team to support the delivery of FiMT’s research and evaluation objectives.

Role overview
The role of the EEO is to: develop and help deliver FiMT’s research and evaluation capability; build relationships with key stakeholders to promote the take up of findings; ensure monitoring and evaluation systems provide FiMT with the information it needs to take forward strategy implementation.

Role responsibilities

Evaluation.

  • Consider, and contribute to discussions with other members of the FiMT Executive Team on the findings in research that FiMT has funded, and how these findings may be implemented. Also, consider the findings from other significant pieces of research in FiMT’s area of interest.
  • Consider linkages across all of FiMT’s funded projects to identify similarities and alignment to deliver maximum impact, ie to achieve impact ‘greater than the sum of its parts’.
  • Under the Head of Policy, contribute to the preparation of research commissioning proposals for research which FiMT wishes to commission. Identify research or evaluations which FiMT may want to consider commissioning based on work funded to date by FiMT.

Impact measurement.

  • Maintain an understanding of the most up-to-date methods of measuring social impact appropriate to FiMT. Lead on measuring the impact across all of FiMT’s change mechanism activity.  Provide advice and guidance on this aspect to both internal and external audiences.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with FiMT’s stakeholders around the UK, to ensure maximum impact from evidence produced by FiMT.
  • Represent the Trust externally as required.

General responsibilities as a member of the Executive Team

  • Contribute to the development and execution of FiMT’s Strategy and the Grants and Commissioning Plan.
  • Operate within the annual budget according to the financial plan and produce the required reports to inform the management accounts.
  • Provide advice, support and guidance to the Board and Committees.
  • Conduct specific activities outwith the Policy, Influence and Evaluation team area as directed by the Chief Executive.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Essential:
    • Educated to under-graduate degree level.
    • Knowledge and experience of commissioning research.
    • Knowledge of how policy and legislation are developed and implemented and how to influence these processes.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to work on own initiative without supervision, and to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines with a high level of accuracy across a diverse portfolio.
    • Strong IT skills, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
    • Excellent inter-personal skills.
    • Act as a good team member, able to work with more than one member of the Executive Team when required.
    • Hold a respect for the UK Armed Forces and an appreciation of their particular characteristics.
  • Desirable:
    • Knowledge of measuring ways of impact.
    • Knowledge of the Armed Forces Community and its unique characteristics.
