The deep-rooted connections with the veteran community remain important to the hospital today with an award-winning Pain Management Programme, grants programme and research programme providing support to those who have served our country.

Job summary: 

The purpose of the Head of Capital Appeal role is to support the development of and successfully help to deliver the Hospital’s largest ever, capital appeal aimed at securing £100M of funding to be invested into the improvement and redevelopment of the hospital’s campus, and in the creation of an endowment fund.

The Head of Capital Appeal will work closely with the Director of Philanthropy and Veterans’ Health, Executive Team and Capital Appeal Board to develop and deliver a fundraising strategy to meet the capital needs of the hospital. Working alongside other fundraising colleagues and recruiting and managing a small team, the individual will lead on the creation of a prospect pipeline and help secure six, seven and eight figure donations.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering a world class stewardship and engagement programme, reflecting the vision, mission and values of the hospital to ensure King Edward VII’s remains at the forefront of private medical care in London.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Strategic development and delivery

  • Support the development of a capital fundraising strategy
  • Lead the development of a robust and compelling organisational case for support that contextualises the need for and impact of the capital appeal
  • Manage a portfolio of 30+ key relationships with a view to maximising their giving of six, seven and eight figure gifts and to ensure robust donor development plans are in place.
  • Promote innovation, best practice and first-class prospect research and insights, donor cultivation and stewardship
  • Manage the annual budgets and expenditure to ensure optimum use of funds in managing the fundraising team with regular and concise upward reporting.
  • Work alongside a small team of fundraising professionals ensuring objectives are met and the highest standards of professionalism are maintained.
  • Be conversant with and effectively use the Raiser’s Edge database to ensure that relationship history and corporate memory is protected for the future of the hospital.

Stakeholder relationships

  • Work with the Capital Appeal Board, CEO and senior organisational stakeholders, to identify and access new networks and direct/support them in the roles they need to play in order to maximise their impact for philanthropic fundraising.
  • Establish, develop and deliver an effective, high-impact fundraising-focused Appeal Board of senior volunteers drawn from existing and new networks
  • Cultivate strong long-term relationships with King Edward VII’s philanthropists and prospects, soliciting gifts and stewarding relationships
  • Build strong networks internally with all teams including clinical staff and externally to promote King Edward VII’s philanthropic agenda.

Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • An in-depth understanding of the UK philanthropic marketplace
  • Excellent communication skills including presentation, negotiation and influencing skills with ability to build relationships across a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders
  • The ability to inspire and motivate colleagues
  • Ability to plan and manage complex projects and relationships working collaboratively across a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Able to take a structured and solution focused approach to decision making

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience of philanthropic fundraising, with a demonstrable track record of raising six figure donations
  • Experience of working with senior volunteer fundraisers to solicit donations
  • Experience of developing effective relationships across an organisation to achieve mutual objectives and of working across functions, to maximise income generation opportunities.

Desirable

  • Experience of working on a large capital appeal
  • Experience of working in the health sector
