SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity in Test Valley arranges dream hot air balloon flight for terminally-ill Forces wife

Last year, SSAFA Test Valley were approached with a very special request from Army veteran Steve Kirk, who served in the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment (PWRR). His terminally-ill wife, Marie, wanted to fulfil one of her bucket list dreams of flying in a hot air balloon before it was too late.

Knowing how much this would mean to the couple, the local branch of the Armed Forces charity sprang into action. SSAFA Caseworker Scott Campbell took the lead on this extra-special mission.

After arranging the funds required from PWRR Benevolent Fund, Scott personally upgraded the experience for Marie and Steve.

Forces Radio BFBS Scoops Two International Radio Awards

Two radio documentaries produced by Forces Radio BFBS have won Silver and Bronze trophies at the 2018 New York Festivals Radio Awards in Manhattan.

I Am Unconquered took Bronze in the Heroes category in the Information/Documentary group. The programme follows four British Invictus Games athletes through their everyday struggles and explores the transformative power of sport.

It was created by Will Warren – a Forces Radio BFBS Producer – and Poppy Pawsey, a former Royal Marine bandswoman.

Haig Housing Trust launches The Long Walk Home

In a call to arms with fellow Veterans charities we ask if you could promulgate the following through your website, social media and any other means of communication that will reach both Veterans and potential volunteers

Haig Housing has launched The Long Walk Home (TLWH), its fundraising pilgrimage to mark 100 years since the ending of World War One. The charity will take 100 Veterans walkers from across the UK to Ypres, Belgium where they will then walk the 100 miles from the Menem Gate to the Cenotaph in Whitehall, timing this to coincide with the National Service of Remembrance on Sunday 11th November.

Automatic disqualification rules for charity trustees and charity senior positions

Guidance for individuals about automatic disqualification rules, what to do if you become disqualified and how to apply for a waiver.

This guidance is for individuals who want to find out if, and how the automatic disqualification rules apply to them. We have produced separate guidance for charities to help them prepare for the new rules.

The charity guidance also includes sample declarations that can be used for relevant senior manager and charity trustee positions.

An Original Music Special for Forces Radio BFBS

Legendary House DJ and producer Lenny Fontana has recorded an exclusive two-hour music special for Forces Radio BFBS.

Fontana shares personal anecdotes about his life and career with Forces Radio BFBS Producer, Neil Moore, starting with his formative years in New York when he absorbed a diverse range of music.

Fontana says: “It was one of the deepest and most candid interviews I was ever asked to be a part of. A very proud moment to share my history and personal experiences.”

Local volunteer is awarded BEM on Queen’s birthday honours list for services to the Military Community

A local volunteer from Lancashire has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Frank McKnight, 63, from Lancashire has been awarded a BEM for his voluntary services to SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. SSAFA provides lifelong support to those currently serving, veterans and their families in their time of need.

Frank, a Navy veteran, has been an integral part of the SSAFA Lancashire branch since 1995 as a volunteer caseworker and member of the IT user group, where he helped move the branch from paper-based to computer-based systems.

Local charity launches Veterans Appeal

South-West based homeless charity Alabaré has announced the launch of our Homes For Veterans Appeal as we believe that no Veteran should be forced to sleep on the streets

By launching our appeal, we are hoping to raise awareness of the housing issues faced by Veterans in their life after the forces. Be it as a result of depression, PTSD or a family breakdown, too many find themselves in the desperate situation of being homeless.

We are hoping that by raising awareness of this issue, we can act to provide the hope and confidence that Veterans need for the future.

Blind veteran from Kent with a passion for photography meets hero David Bailey

A blind veteran from Rochester, Kent, has fulfilled a lifelong dream of meeting photographer David Bailey at the Brighton rehabilitation and training centre of military charity Blind Veterans UK.

Ray Munday, 88, attended the event held last month as part of a photography-themed activity week run by the charity, which supports vision-impaired ex-Service men and women. Ray was one of 14 blind veterans to attend the week.

Ray says: “When I was told about the visit my jaw dropped – I was so excited, because I’ve followed Bailey since he shot to fame in the 60s. You could say I’m a groupie, because I love his photography! He’s a great bloke.”

LifeWorks and LifeWorks Families Course Dates 2018

Dates for RBLI’s intensive veteran employment programme LifeWorks have been released for 2018. Of the veterans who have attended LifeWorks courses, 83% find sustained employment within a year, 80% of those individuals suffer with either a physical or mental disability or health condition.

The LifeWorks Families schedule has also been updated. LWF is a support service which aims to help veteran’s spouses and partners into sustained employment.
